Jacksonville Jaguars assistant Kevin Maxen becomes first male coach in major U.S. pro league to come out as gay

Kevin Maxen, an associate strength coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars, has made history by becoming the first male coach in a major U.S.-based professional league to come out as gay. Maxen spoke openly about his sexual orientation in an interview with Outsports.com, stating that he no longer wants to feel the need to hide his true self. He expressed a desire to live authentically and support others in doing the same, without fear of judgment or discrimination.

Maxen, who has been with the Jacksonville Jaguars since the 2021 season, previously worked as a strength coach at Baylor and Vanderbilt, as well as internships at Iowa and Army. His decision to come out publicly was motivated by a desire to lead an open life with his boyfriend of two years, Nick. Maxen expressed that he no longer wants to feel pressured to lie about his personal life or keep his relationship a secret.

The announcement of Maxen's sexual orientation has received an outpouring of support from the Jaguars organization. Shad Khan, the owner of the team, released a statement expressing his support for Maxen and emphasizing that he is a valued member of the Jaguars community. Marcus Pollard, the Jaguars Director of Player Development, praised Maxen's hard work and dedication as a strength and conditioning coach. Brandon Linder, a center for the Jaguars, shared that Maxen had been a significant influence on his own career and expressed his pride in Maxen's decision to come out publicly.

Maxen also touched on the intersectionality of his identity, discussing how his race and religion have shaped his outlook. As a Black Jew who has dated both men and women, Maxen emphasized that his worth should not be determined by his physical appearance or his sexual orientation. He highlighted the importance of accepting oneself and taking control of one's own story.

While Maxen is the first known openly gay male coach in U.S. professional sports, several NFL players have previously come out. Carl Nassib, formerly with the Las Vegas Raiders, became the first active NFL player to come out publicly in 2021. Additionally, Katie Sowers, a former assistant coach with the San Francisco 49ers, became the first woman and openly gay coach to participate in a Super Bowl in 2020.

Maxen's decision to come out publicly has paved the way for greater visibility and acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals in the world of professional sports. His courage and authenticity serve as an inspiration to others who may be struggling with their own identities. Maxen hopes that by sharing his story, he can empower others to accept themselves and live their lives authentically.
