Iconic crooner Tony Bennett passes away at 96

17:07 21.07.2023

Tony Bennett, one of the most beloved and recognizable voices in the history of American popular music, passed away on Friday at the age of 96, just days before his birthday, according to his publicist, Sylvia Weiner. The music icon died in his hometown of New York, though the cause of his death has not been disclosed.

Bennett's velvety voice provided the soundtrack for countless romantic evenings and showcased his timeless brand of standards that appealed to a broad audience, even as the music industry shifted with the rise of rock and rap. Despite privately battling a cognitive disorder in recent years, Bennett continued to record music, as his family revealed in AARP magazine on February 1, 2021.

The life and career of Tony Bennett, a World War II veteran and a true legend, could easily inspire multiple biopics. However, his most enduring legacy will likely be his unique vocal style, which catapulted him to superstardom in the 1950s and allowed him to enjoy a remarkable resurgence in the last 25 years of his life.

In 2015, Bennett's friend and frequent collaborator expressed the significance of his music, stating, "So much of the music that has been introduced through the Great American Songbook, through Fred Astaire, is passed on through generations of men and women, and Tony is one of those men." Bennett's ability to transcend time and captivate audiences across different eras made him a true icon.

Born Anthony Dominick Benedetto on August 3, 1926, in Astoria, Queens, New York City, Bennett's musical journey began after studying singing at the American Theatre Wing. He was reportedly discovered by the legendary African American singer Pearl Bailey, who hired him to open for her in 1949. The following year, Bennett signed with Columbia Records and started making a name for himself with hits like "Rags to Riches" and "Because of You."

However, it was his signature song, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," released in 1962 as a B-side, that catapulted Bennett to A-list status. The song seamlessly merged the worlds of pop and jazz, earning him critical acclaim and winning him the Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Solo Vocal Performance in 1962. These were the first of his 20 Grammy Awards throughout his illustrious seven-decade career, including the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.

In addition to his Grammy wins, Bennett also received two Emmy Awards and was honored as a Kennedy Center honoree and a recipient of the Gershwin Prize and NEA Jazz. His achievements and contributions to the music industry were truly unparalleled.

Even in his later years, Bennett continued to create music and collaborate with artists across generations. His final Grammy win came in 2021 for his collaborative album with Lady Gaga, titled "Love For Sale."

As the news of Tony Bennett's passing spreads, tributes pour in from fans and fellow musicians alike. The world mourns the loss of an extraordinary talent and a true icon whose music will continue to resonate for generations to come.
