Alleged Shooter at Memphis Jewish School Charged with Attempted Murder

23:30 02.08.2023

In a shocking incident in Memphis, Tennessee, a man has been charged with multiple crimes, including attempted murder, after he allegedly fired shots outside the Margolin Hebrew Academy on Monday. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation announced the charges on Wednesday. The accused, identified as Joel Alejandro Bowman, 33, reportedly tried to enter the school while armed but was unsuccessful. Failing to gain entry, he fired several shots outside the school before fleeing the scene in his pickup truck.

Approximately an hour later, a Memphis police officer spotted Bowman's vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. However, instead of cooperating, Bowman allegedly got out of the truck carrying a gun. In response, the police officer shot Bowman, who was then rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Thankfully, no one at the school was injured during the incident.

It was later revealed that Bowman was a former student at the Margolin Hebrew Academy, adding another layer of shock to the incident. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation stated that Bowman has been charged with several offenses, including Carrying Weapons on School Property, Reckless Endangerment, Criminal Attempted Second-Degree Murder, Possessing a Firearm During the Commission or Attempt to Commit a Dangerous Felony, and Assault Against a First Responder.

As of now, Bowman remains hospitalized, and officials have not provided an update on his condition. The incident has raised concerns about school safety, but Assistant Police Chief Don Crowe praised the Margolin Hebrew Academy's safety procedures, which effectively prevented any harm to students or staff. "Thankfully, that school had a great safety procedure and process in place and avoided anyone being harmed or injured at that scene," he said.

In the aftermath of the incident, the Memphis Police Department held a news conference where Crowe addressed the possibility of the incident being a hate crime. While it is still too early to determine the motive, Crowe noted that the suspect appeared determined to harm people. "I think the suspect was going to harm somebody before the day was over and that our officers were able to intervene and protect the citizens," he stated.

This incident has shocked the community, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation will be conducting a thorough investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Meanwhile, local congressman revealed that the accused, who allegedly targeted a Jewish school, is himself Jewish and a former pupil at the Margolin Hebrew Academy. The revelation has left many baffled as to the motive behind the attempted mass shooting.

Margolin Hebrew Academy, a co-ed school catering to children in first through eighth grades, will undoubtedly be reviewing its security measures in light of this incident. The community is now grappling with the aftermath of this terrifying event, hoping for a swift recovery for the suspect and seeking answers to the questions surrounding this shocking incident.
