CM Punk fired by AEW with cause after backstage incident at All In

10:42 03.09.2023

In a shocking turn of events, All Elite Wrestling (AEW) has announced the termination of CM Punk's contract just days after a backstage incident with fellow wrestler Jack Perry. The incident occurred right before AEW's premier event, All In, last week. AEW CEO Tony Khan made the decision to terminate Punk's contract with cause, stating that the incident had endangered people backstage, including innocent production staff members.

According to reports, the altercation between Punk and Perry took place in the gorilla position and escalated into a physical altercation. Punk, whose real name is Phil Brooks, had recently returned to AEW on their new show "Collision." This incident follows a previous scuffle between Punk and AEW stars Kenny Omega, Nick Jackson, and Matt Jackson after comments he made to the media following All Out last year.

AEW, however, did not let this incident overshadow the success of their premier event. They proudly announced that All In had the "most paid fans ever at a pro wrestling event," with an attendance of 81,035 at London's Wembley Stadium. Nevertheless, the termination of Punk's contract has come as a disappointment to many fans.

Khan expressed his regret over the incident and emphasized the importance of ensuring a safe working environment for everyone involved in AEW. He stated that he had never felt his security, safety, and life were in danger at a wrestling show until this incident. Khan's decision to terminate Punk's contract was made in the best interests of the talent, staff, and venue operators who work tirelessly to bring AEW's shows to fans worldwide.

The altercation between Punk and Perry reportedly stemmed from a disagreement over the use of real glass during a segment at an AEW Collision show earlier in the summer. Punk rejected Perry's idea to use real glass, leading to tension between the two wrestlers. This tension finally boiled over backstage at All In, resulting in Punk's termination.

Punk's departure from AEW marks the second backstage incident for the pro wrestling superstar in the past year. AEW's discipline committee conducted a week-long internal investigation before unanimously recommending Punk's termination to Khan. The company cited the incident at All In as the reason for Punk's contract termination.

AEW thanked Punk for his contributions to the company in their official statement but made it clear that the termination was Khan's decision alone. Punk's future in professional wrestling remains uncertain, as this incident follows a series of injuries that have disrupted his career. Despite being a consistent draw for AEW, Punk has faced setbacks due to foot and triceps injuries that kept him out of action for several months.

The tensions between Punk and AEW stars The Elite, including Kenny Omega, Nick Jackson, and Matt Jackson, have been ongoing. Punk had previously stated that he had not spoken to The Elite since their backstage brawl after the All Out pay-per-view in September of last year. With The Elite recently signing multi-year extensions with AEW, it seems that the tensions between them and Punk may have reached a breaking point.

As AEW prepares for their upcoming pay-per-view, All Out, in Punk's hometown of Chicago, the absence of the former world champion will undoubtedly be felt. Whether Punk's wrestling career will continue or come to an end remains to be seen, but his tenure with AEW has been marked by controversy and ups and downs.
