Houston Rockets guard Kevin Porter Jr arrested for assault, strangulation

09:44 12.09.2023

Houston Rockets guard Kevin Porter Jr. has been arrested and charged with assault and strangulation after allegedly attacking his girlfriend, a former WNBA player, at a hotel in New York City. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday morning at the Millennium Hilton near the United Nations in Manhattan. Police received a 911 call reporting an assault, and when they arrived at the scene, they found Porter's girlfriend, identified as Kysre Gondrezick, with a cut on her face and experiencing neck pain.

According to sources, the alleged assault took place after the couple had gone out together on Sunday night and returned to the hotel. Gondrezick was sleeping when she was awakened by Porter hitting her, sources said. She was subsequently taken to a local hospital for a medical evaluation and is listed in stable condition.

Porter, whose full name is Bryan Kevin Porter Jr., was taken into custody and charged with assault and strangulation. The NBA spokesperson stated that the league office is aware of the reports and is in contact with the Houston Rockets to gather more information.

Porter, who signed a $63.4 million contract with the Rockets in 2022, was scheduled to appear in Manhattan Criminal Court for arraignment on Monday. As he entered the courthouse with his hands cuffed behind his back, Porter remained silent and either looked down or straight ahead. The former first-round draft pick has a history of outbursts, which led to his trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Rockets in January 2021.

In a previous incident, Porter was charged with improperly handling a firearm in a vehicle in Cleveland, Ohio, in November 2020, but the case was dropped the following month. He has also been involved in altercations with teammates and coaches, including a halftime exchange in January 2022 where he threw an object and had to be separated from an assistant coach.

Representatives for the Houston Rockets did not provide a comment regarding the recent arrest. Porter's arrest has raised concerns about his future in the NBA, as the league and the team assess the situation. Porter has played 196 career games, averaging 15.3 points, 5.0 assists, and 4.3 rebounds. He signed a four-year contract extension in October 2021 worth up to $82.5 million, with his salary for the 2023-24 season being the only fully guaranteed amount.
