Andrew Luck Makes Quiet Football Comeback, Pursues Graduate Degree

05:53 15.09.2023

Former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck has returned to the football field, but this time as a coach. After shocking the NFL world with his retirement in 2019 at the age of 29, Luck is now coaching for Palo Alto High School as he pursues a Master's degree at Stanford's School of Education, according to The Mercury News.

Luck, 34, began studying at his alma mater, Stanford, last fall and reached out to the coaching staff at Palo Alto High School. He has been coaching the team twice a week this season, helping players with techniques and providing valuable insight. Palo Alto senior quarterback Declan Packer spoke highly of Luck's football knowledge, stating, "The first week he got here, we have our whole playbook and he walks in not knowing any of our plays. The next day he comes, he knew every single play. It was crazy - he knows everything about football."

Palo Alto head coach Dave DeGeronimo expressed his excitement about having Luck on the coaching staff, saying, "It's great to have someone of that caliber on your staff. The kids love it." Luck's retirement came as a shock to many, as he was coming off an impressive season in 2018, where he threw for 4,593 yards and 39 touchdowns, earning him the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year award.

Luck was selected as the No. 1 overall pick by the Colts in the 2012 NFL Draft and quickly established himself as the team's franchise quarterback following the departure of Peyton Manning. Under Luck's leadership, the Colts reached the playoffs four times in his six seasons with the team.

In a past interview with ESPN, Luck shared his thoughts on potentially coaching, saying, "If I were to coach, what would I bring? Well, certainly an experience that's semi-unique on the scale of football experiences. I shouldn't say semi-unique. Completely unique." Despite his return to the football field as a coach, Luck declined an interview request for The Mercury News story, maintaining his typically private lifestyle.

Since retiring from the NFL, Luck has largely stayed out of the public eye, but rumors circulated that the Washington Commanders reached out to him prior to the 2022 season to gauge his interest in returning to football. However, Luck decided to remain in retirement and focus on his coaching aspirations.

Luck's return to football as a coach brings him back to his college roots, where he excelled playing for the Stanford Cardinal. He is expected to contribute to multiple position groups, including the quarterbacks and wide receivers, providing valuable guidance and expertise.

Overall, the presence of a former NFL star like Andrew Luck on the coaching staff has brought excitement and inspiration to Palo Alto High School, and his knowledge of the game is sure to benefit the players as they continue their football journey.
