Ophelia's Delays and Threat of Flash Floods Dampen NYC Weekend

08:54 24.09.2023

New York City is bracing for a wet and windy weekend as the remnants of Tropical Depression Ophelia continue to bring heavy downpours and strong winds to the area. The storm, which made landfall in North Carolina on Saturday morning, has weakened but continues to cause concern for flooding and coastal hazards.

The National Weather Service has warned that the rain and possibility of flash flooding will persist well into Monday morning, extending the already soggy conditions from the weekend. Despite Ophelia downgrading to a Tropical Depression on Saturday evening, forecasters are urging New Yorkers to stay indoors and take precautions.

Marissa Lautenbacher, a meteorologist from Fox Weather, explained that while the rain is expected to ease off at times, there will still be pockets of heavy rainfall. However, she reassured that the risk of flooding is minimal and that the storm is gradually dying down.

As Ophelia moves further into the Atlantic Ocean, areas of eastern Pennsylvania to just south of Long Island are likely to experience heavy rainfall along its frontal boundary. The risk of flash flooding will remain throughout Sunday night, with Monday's morning commute expected to be wet and potentially hazardous.

Coastal flooding and rough surf will also remain concerns for the Mid-Atlantic coastline until Monday. Winds will continue to be gusty, with gusts of up to 20 mph still expected on Sunday morning before gradually easing.

New York City had already issued a travel warning on Friday night in anticipation of the storm, and flights at all three airports were reporting delays throughout the weekend. By Sunday morning, several flights had been canceled entirely.

The New York City Emergency Management Department has issued a travel advisory for Saturday and Sunday, and crews from the Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Transportation are working to inspect and clean catch basins in flood-prone areas.

Minor coastal flooding is expected in vulnerable locations, including the New York and New Jersey harbor, Jamaica Bay, southern bays of Nassau County, and coastal Westchester. The region is reminded that hurricane season is still ongoing and to take necessary precautions.

The weekend's weather conditions have already caused disruptions, with delays at airports and the postponement of the Saturday Yankee game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. However, the outdoor Global Citizen Festival in Central Park is set to proceed as planned, rain or shine.

While the rain will gradually subside, temperatures will remain cool throughout the weekend, ranging from the low to mid-60s and rising to 66 degrees by Monday. New Yorkers are advised to stay updated on the weather conditions and take necessary precautions to stay safe during this wet and windy weekend.
