Singer-songwriter Terry Kirkman, one of the founding members of the legendary 1960s folk-rock band the Association, has passed away at the age of 83. The news of Kirkman's death was confirmed through a statement on the Association's official Facebook page on Sunday, where they expressed their sadness and paid tribute to the late musician. The statement read, "We're saddened to report that Terry Kirkman passed away last night, RIP Terry. He will live on in our hearts and in the music he so brilliantly wrote."

Born on December 12, 1939, in Salina, Kansas, Kirkman began his musical journey in Los Angeles in 1965 when he co-founded the Association alongside Jules Gary Alexander, Russ Giguere, Ted Bluechel Jr., Brian Cole, and Bob Page, who was soon replaced by Jim Yester. The group stood out with their large ensemble of vocalists and instrumentalists, known for their intricate vocal harmonies.

In 1966, the Association released their debut album titled "And Then??¦ Along Comes the Association," which featured some of their greatest hits such as Cherish and "Along Comes Mary." Throughout their career, the band released several other successful albums including "Renaissance," "Insight Out," "Birthday," and "Stop Your Motor." Kirkman played a significant role in the band's success as he wrote numerous songs, including the iconic "Cherish," "Everything That Touches You," "Requiem for the Masses," and "Six Man Band."

The Association's talent did not go unnoticed, and they received recognition in the form of six Grammy Award nominations. Cherish alone was nominated for three categories: contemporary rock and roll group performance, performance by a vocal group, and contemporary rock and roll recording.

Kirkman initially left the Association in 1972 but returned when the band reformed in 1979. However, his second stint was short-lived, and he departed for good in 1984. In 2003, the talented songwriter was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, along with other members of the Association, commemorating their contributions to music.

Kirkman is survived by his wife Heidi, daughter Sasha, son-in-law, and two grandchildren. The band's Facebook post also extended their condolences, saying, "Sending hugs and lots of love to Heidi and Sasha!"

Kirkman's impact on music extended beyond his work with the Association. Before the band's formation, he had the opportunity to play alongside Frank Zappa in California during the early 1960s. Kirkman and Jules Alexander later formed a band called The Inner Tubes, which eventually merged with another group called The Men. When The Men disbanded, a half-dozen members, including Kirkman, came together to form what would become the iconic band, the Association.

Throughout their career, the Association graced the stage of the renowned Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, solidifying their place in music history. They also made various television appearances, performing on popular shows such as "The Ed Sullivan Show" and "The Smothers Brothers."

After leaving the Association in 1972, Kirkman embarked on a career as a drug counselor for artists in recovery, leaving behind a lasting impact on both the music industry and the lives of those he worked with.

Kirkman's songwriting talent was truly remarkable, and his biggest hit, "Cherish," continues to be beloved by fans across generations. In a 2015 interview, Kirkman reflected on the writing process of the iconic song, stating, "'Cherish' came in one fell swoop. I actually channeled it. Or I was channeled. I really don't know what the source was. I've never understood the process nor do I think I will ever understand the process." He also expressed his surprise at the song's popularity as a wedding favorite, despite its theme of love lost. Kirkman mused, "Maybe it was that stirring youth march tempo that did them in."

The world has lost a talented musician, but Terry Kirkman's legacy will live on through his timeless music and the impact he made on the industry.
