Accidental Release Leads to Capture of Murder Suspect in Minnesota

16:07 27.09.2023

Minneapolis murder suspect, Kevin Mason, has been apprehended in St. Paul, Minnesota, after being mistakenly released from an Indianapolis jail earlier this month. The Marion County Sheriff's Office announced that Mason was arrested on Wednesday by the U.S. Marshal Service. The arrest took place at approximately 1 p.m. on the 900 block of Summit Avenue without incident or injuries.

Mason, 28, was charged with second-degree murder in connection to the fatal shooting of Dontevius Catchings in the Shiloh Temple parking lot in June 2021. The incident occurred during a visitation for a man who had died in a shootout outside a downtown Minneapolis nightclub. Mason was charged with a warrant in Hennepin County two months later.

After evading capture for over two years, Mason was arrested in Indianapolis on September 11. However, due to a mistake made by jailhouse employees, he was released just two days later. Marion County Sheriff Kerry Forestal revealed that Mason's girlfriend had picked him up near the jail, initiating a massive manhunt. Authorities have been searching for him until his arrest on Wednesday.

Forestal expressed his gratitude and congratulations to the U.S. Marshal Service for their efforts in bringing Mason back into custody. He commended their assistance and wide resources, particularly their task force partnerships with local law enforcement agencies, which allowed them to pursue Mason throughout the country.

Mason is not currently facing charges in Indianapolis. The details surrounding his mistaken release have been revealed by Colonel James Martin of the Marion County Sheriff's Office. According to Martin, a clerical error led to Mason's release, as an inmate records clerk mistakenly removed two holds instead of correcting different bookings. The error went unnoticed until Ramsey County in Minnesota lifted the last hold that Mason was booked on, resulting in his release. Two clerks in Marion County, Indiana, were subsequently terminated due to the mistake.

Mason's accidental release sparked a six-day delay in publicly announcing the incident, as authorities wanted to maintain a tactical advantage in their search for him. The Minneapolis Police Department had previously charged Mason with second-degree murder for his alleged involvement in the shooting at the Shiloh Temple parking lot.

Authorities had requested the public's assistance in locating Mason in September, believing he may have traveled to Florida. However, he was ultimately arrested in St. Paul, Minnesota, bringing an end to his two-week run from the law.

This is an ongoing story, and further updates will be provided.
