NJ man intentionally crashes car into home, police station

05:09 30.09.2023

Last week, a shocking incident occurred in New Jersey when a man intentionally drove his SUV into a home and the offices of a municipal police department. The Warren County Prosecutor's Office announced on Friday that no one was injured in the crashes, which took place on September 20th.

The primary target of this deliberate act was a homeowner in Liberty Township, who authorities revealed was known to the suspect - 34-year-old John Hargreaves from Belvidere. Hargreaves reportedly had a motive to harass this individual and decided to carry out his plan by driving into the homeowner's garage door, causing significant damage.

However, it did not stop there. Hargreaves, seemingly determined to cause chaos, then made his way to the Independence Township police headquarters, which was the closest station to the targeted home. As he drove into the police department, his vehicle crashed through the building and came to a halt in the squad room, causing extensive damage to the premises. Astonishingly, no officers were harmed during this incident, but one officer narrowly avoided being struck by the vehicle.

In a bizarre turn of events, as Hargreaves exited his SUV, he raised his hands in the air and appeared to be celebrating. Notably, he was loudly playing the Guns N' Roses song "Welcome to the Jungle" on his car stereo. Officers swiftly apprehended him and took him into custody.

Hargreaves now faces a slew of charges in connection with both crashes. He has been charged with burglary, criminal mischief, and a weapons count for the home crash, while the police station crash has led to charges of terrorism, aggravated assault, and causing widespread injury or damage. Authorities have not disclosed any potential motives for Hargreaves' actions, leaving many questions unanswered.

The suspect remains behind bars as of Friday, and it is unclear whether he has obtained legal representation. County prosecutors have not been able to confirm if Hargreaves has retained an attorney. The Associated Press reached out to an attorney who had previously represented him in another case but received no response. Furthermore, efforts to locate a telephone number for Hargreaves have proven unsuccessful.

The community has been left in shock and disbelief as they try to comprehend the series of events orchestrated by Hargreaves. The impact of these deliberate crashes on both the targeted homeowner and the police department is yet to be determined. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident, hoping to shed light on the motive behind these alarming acts of aggression.
