Sea Lion Breaks Free During Central Park Zoo Flooding

12:11 30.09.2023

In a surprising turn of events, a female sea lion at the Central Park Zoo in New York City took advantage of the heavy rain and flooding on Friday to escape her pool enclosure and go on a swimming adventure. The sea lion was able to navigate through the floodwaters, using her flippers to propel herself around the zoo grounds. Despite her newfound freedom, the sea lion did not venture outside of the facility's boundaries.

Officials from the Wildlife Conservation Society, which oversees the zoo, assured the public that the sea lion was closely monitored during her excursion. Jim Breheny, the executive vice president of the Wildlife Conservation Society, stated that the sea lion was able to swim out of her pool due to the flooding caused by the severe rains in the city. He emphasized that the sea lion remained within the zoo's premises and eventually returned to the familiar surroundings of her pool, rejoining the other two sea lions.

The Central Park Zoo had already closed its doors before the heavy rainfall, ensuring the safety of both staff members and visitors. The Wildlife Conservation Society announced the closure of all its facilities, including the Bronx Zoo, Queens Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo, and the New York Aquarium, due to the inclement weather conditions.

The city of New York experienced significant flooding, with Central Park receiving nearly 6 inches of rain from the storm, according to the National Weather Service. Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul declared states of emergency, urging residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Flash flood warnings were issued, cautioning against venturing out unless fleeing from flooded areas or under evacuation orders.

While the sea lion's escapade captured the attention of many New Yorkers, it was not the first time a zoo animal had made a daring escape. In 2011, an Egyptian cobra slithered out of its enclosure at the Bronx Zoo, leading to a week-long search that captivated the city. The snake, named Mia, even had a Twitter account created from its perspective, which remained active years later. However, the sea lion's adventure was less dramatic, as she safely returned to her pool without causing any disruption.

The Wildlife Conservation Society assured the public that all animals at the Central Park Zoo were accounted for and safe during the storm. The zoo remained closed to focus on the well-being of the animals and the protection of the facilities. The sea lion's brief escape served as a reminder of the resilience and adaptability of these marine creatures, as well as the dedication of the zoo staff in ensuring their safety.
