Alabama Gov. Ivey sending 275 National Guard troops to Mexico border: 'Every state has become a border state'

02:40 06.10.2023

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has announced that she will be deploying 275 National Guard troops to the southern border, following the footsteps of other Republican governors. In a statement, Ivey expressed Alabama's commitment to protecting the border, stating that "every state has become a border state under the current policies." She also thanked the troops and their families for their service to the country.

The decision to send troops to the border comes after Ivey, along with 24 other governors, sent a letter to President Biden urging him to provide "honest, accurate, detailed information" about the migrant crisis. The governors, led by Montana Governor Greg Gianforte, expressed concern over the burden that their states have been carrying due to the surge in illegal border crossings and the trafficking of drugs and human beings by cartels. They highlighted the strain on resources such as shelters, food pantries, law enforcement, and aid workers.

This is not the first time Governor Ivey has sent National Guard troops to the border. In 2018, she deployed a small number of troops to support the Texas National Guard and border officials. In 2022, she joined the American Governors' Border Strike Force, a coalition of 26 states aimed at coordinating efforts to deter illegal immigration on the southern border. Other governors, such as those from Virginia, West Virginia, and South Carolina, have also recently announced their plans to send troops to the border, responding to pleas from Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

The deployment of National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border by Republican governors reflects their concerns about the current immigration policies and the impact they have on their respective states. As the crisis continues, these governors are taking action to protect their citizens and alleviate the strain on resources caused by the influx of migrants.
