Heightened Security at NYC Synagogues Following Hamas Attack on Israel

16:13 08.10.2023

A delegation of NYPD officials, including high-ranking members, was caught near the Gaza Strip when radical Islamic militants launched a surprise attack on Israel over the weekend. The group, consisting of 32 members, had arrived in Israel on Thursday and were only 20 miles away from the border when Hamas attacked on Saturday. The officials were forced to seek shelter until they could safely evacuate on Sunday, with the expectation of being back in New York by Monday. Among the delegation were a deputy chief investigator from District Attorney Miriam Rocah's office and a half dozen Westchester County officials.

Upon learning about the situation, Rocah reassured the public that the delegation was in a safe location and efforts were being made for their safe return home. She expressed gratitude for their protection and wellbeing during the evacuation and acknowledged the devastating events unfolding in Israel. Similarly, high-ranking members of the NYPD were also part of the delegation.

The attack by Hamas on Israel involved multiple fronts, resulting in the seizure of around two dozen Israeli towns, casualties among both soldiers and civilians, and the kidnapping of over 100 hostages. This assault, which took place on the 50th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War, has led to hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries on both sides. In response, Israel has mobilized a massive military operation, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declaring a state of war and calling up military reservists.

Following the attack, the NYPD has implemented heightened security measures at synagogues and other Jewish sites in New York City. The department's Critical Response Command has been placed on high alert and deployed to protect potential terror targets throughout the five boroughs. Heavily armed officers have been stationed at sensitive locations, including the Israeli Consulate in Midtown. Although there have been no specific threats against the city, the NYPD remains vigilant due to its status as a major potential terror target.

The NYPD Counterterrorism and Intelligence Division is consistently on high alert and increases its presence around houses of worship and areas where conflicts like this arise. The department is closely monitoring the situation and any further developments. Mayor Eric Adams expressed support for Israel, emphasizing the close ties between New York City and the country with the largest Jewish population outside of Israel. The weekend deployment of the NYPD's counterterrorism units comes just weeks after plans were revealed to potentially reduce the Critical Response Command by up to 75%, reassigning officers to street-level patrol units.

With the attack on Israel intensifying over the weekend, the death toll and number of injured continue to rise. Israeli casualties are estimated to be over 600 dead and 2,000 wounded, with numerous hostages, including Americans, being taken by Hamas. Gaza Strip health officials reported at least 300 Palestinian deaths and 2,200 injuries. The conflict has triggered Israel's declaration of war and mobilization of its forces.

Overall, the situation remains tense and uncertain, with New York City officials closely monitoring developments and taking necessary precautions to ensure the safety of its residents.
