President Biden supports Israel amid Hamas attack

23:57 10.10.2023

In a recent interview on "CBS Mornings," John Kirby, the National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications, reiterated the Biden administration's commitment to a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine. This comes in the wake of a large-scale attack launched by Hamas militants on Israel. Kirby expressed his support for the Israeli people and their right to defend themselves, while also emphasizing the importance of a two-state solution.

Kirby stated that President Biden believes an independent state for both Palestine and Israel is the best path forward for peace and security in the Middle East. He emphasized that the administration has been actively working towards this goal since day one and will continue to do so.

The attack by Hamas has resulted in the deaths of over 1,600 people, including at least 11 Americans. Kirby expressed concern that some Americans may be held hostage by Hamas and assured that the safety and security of Americans overseas is a top priority for the Biden administration. Hamas is known for its designation as a terrorist organization by both Israel and the United States.

In response to the hostage situation, Jon Finer, a deputy national security adviser for the Biden administration, stated that the United States will offer "every kind of support" to Israel. He emphasized that the U.S. will be focused on confirming the presence of any Americans being held hostage and expressed the expectation that there may be Americans caught up in the situation.

The assault by Hamas involved the infiltration of Israel by air and sea, as well as the slaughter and kidnapping of civilians. The Israeli Defense Forces reported that over 100 people are being held captive by Hamas. In response, Israel's Defense Minister Yoav Gallant ordered a "complete siege" of the Gaza Strip, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to exact a price that will be remembered by Hamas and Israel's other enemies for decades to come.

Kirby expressed the United States' commitment to ensuring that Israeli forces have the necessary resources to defend themselves, while also emphasizing the importance of avoiding harm to innocent civilians on either side. He stated that both Israel and the U.S. share values and interests, including a belief in the rule of law, and that observing this rule of law strengthens their partnership.

The United States has not seen any direct involvement from Iran in the immediate attacks launched by Hamas, although Iran is believed to be complicit in supporting the militant group. President Biden's recent deal with Iran has faced criticism from Republican presidential candidates, who have attempted to link it to the assault. The White House has strongly denied these claims, stating that the funds from the deal are safeguarded for food and humanitarian aid and have not been used to fund terrorists.

President Biden is set to deliver remarks on the Hamas attacks, expressing unwavering support for Israel and condemning the actions of Hamas. The U.S. will provide additional equipment and resources to the Israeli military, including munitions, in response to the assault. The first tranche of security assistance is already on its way to Israel, and further requests will be fulfilled to support their needs in the fight against Hamas.

The joint statement issued by President Biden and the leaders of France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom emphasized their support for Israel in defending itself against the attacks and condemned Hamas for its acts of terrorism. They recognized the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people but stressed that Hamas does not represent those aspirations and only brings more terror and bloodshed.

President Biden's remarks will be broadcast live from the White House and will address the ongoing situation in Israel regarding the Hamas attacks. The administration's support for Israel and commitment to a two-state solution will likely be reiterated.
