BWI Airport terminal road closed to investigate bomb threat: reports

20:07 11.10.2023

Officials at Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) Thurgood Marshall Airport temporarily shut down a roadway to the hub on Wednesday afternoon in response to a possible bomb threat. Reports indicate that a suspect was arrested in connection with the incident. BWI officials took to social media at 3:10 p.m. to announce that a law enforcement investigation was underway on Terminal Roadway, and all vehicular traffic approaching the airport was being held as a precautionary measure.

Passengers and airport staff in the lower level terminal were advised to remain in place until further notice. The atmosphere grew tense as rumors of a potential threat circulated among those in the vicinity. However, just over an hour later, authorities provided some relief when the Maryland Transportation Authority Police announced at 4:30 p.m. that the airport terminal road was reopening to traffic on the upper level. They assured the public that there was no ongoing threat to their safety.

According to Fox 5 in Washington, D.C., the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) disclosed that a man had informed law enforcement officials that he had explosives in his vehicle after parking it at the airport. However, when reached for further information, the TSA directed inquiries to the lead law enforcement agency handling the case, the Maryland Transportation Authority Police.

The MDTA police confirmed that they had taken an individual into custody based on statements made by the individual. Out of an abundance of caution, officers implemented precautionary measures to ensure the safety of all involved. As of now, the investigation into the incident is still ongoing, with authorities diligently working to gather all relevant information.

While the reopening of the terminal road signifies a step towards normalcy, the incident has undeniably raised concerns about security at the BWI airport. Passengers and staff alike are now left to question how such threats can be prevented in the future and what measures will be put in place to ensure the safety of all individuals within the airport's premises.
