04:03 23.10.2023

In a joint statement released on Sunday, President Biden and leaders of several Western allies expressed their unwavering support for Israel's right to defend itself against terrorism. The leaders, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, also urged Israel to protect civilians and adhere to international humanitarian law.

The statement acknowledged the release of two hostages by Hamas and called for the immediate release of the remaining hostages. The leaders emphasized the importance of upholding international humanitarian law, particularly in terms of protecting civilians. They also committed to closely coordinating efforts to assist their nationals in the region, particularly those wishing to leave Gaza.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has resulted in a devastating loss of lives, with over 5,700 people killed and thousands more wounded. Tragically, many individuals have also been taken hostage by Hamas, facing horrific acts of violence including rape, torture, and murder.

The meeting among the Western leaders took place following a conversation between President Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The leaders discussed humanitarian aid to Gaza and efforts to secure the release of the more than 200 people, including U.S. citizens, held hostage by Hamas.

In their joint statement, the leaders expressed support for the arrival of aid convoys in Gaza and pledged to continue working with regional partners to ensure safe access to food, water, medical care, and other essential humanitarian assistance for the residents of Gaza.

Furthermore, the leaders agreed to maintain close diplomatic coordination, including with key partners in the region, to prevent the conflict from spreading and preserve stability in the Middle East. They also committed to working towards a political solution and durable peace.

President Biden and Prime Minister Netanyahu also discussed the arrival of the first aid convoys to Gaza, ensuring a continued flow of humanitarian assistance to the region. The leaders emphasized their commitment to securing the release of all remaining hostages, including U.S. citizens, and facilitating the safe departure of U.S. citizens and other civilians in Gaza who wish to leave.

The White House expressed its appreciation for Israel's role in assisting with the release of two American hostages and affirmed that critical assistance will continue to flow into Gaza. The leaders agreed to remain in close touch to address the ongoing developments.

President Biden also engaged in discussions about the Israel-Hamas conflict with Pope Francis, Prime Minister Trudeau of Canada, President Macron of France, Chancellor Scholz of Germany, Prime Minister Meloni of Italy, and Prime Minister Sunak of the UK. These conversations underscore the international community's concern and commitment to finding a resolution to the crisis.
