Escaped Murder Suspect Recaptured After Months on the Run

01:30 27.10.2023

After more than six weeks on the run, murder suspect Christopher Haynes has been recaptured by authorities, according to officials. Haynes, who was initially arrested in connection with the killing of Brent Hayward, escaped from George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C., on September 6. The U.S. Marshals Service regional task force apprehended Haynes in Oxon Hill, Maryland, around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday.

The escape occurred on the same day Haynes was arrested in Manassas, Virginia, for the murder of Hayward, who was fatally shot outside of a convenience store in northeast Washington. Police stated that after Haynes was arrested, he complained about ankle pain and was taken to the hospital. It was then, as an officer was changing his handcuffs to attach one to a gurney, that Haynes physically assaulted the officer and fled from the hospital with one handcuff still attached to his right wrist.

This incident led to a manhunt involving multiple agencies, with authorities searching around the hospital. The escape also prompted a temporary lockdown at George Washington University and temporary closures near the White House. The seriousness of the situation was emphasized by the fact that investigators offered a reward of $30,000 for information leading to Haynes' arrest.

Haynes' recapture was celebrated by the Metropolitan Police Department, who announced that he is now back in their custody. He will be charged with Hayward's murder, as well as the escape. The department expressed gratitude to community members who provided information about Haynes' whereabouts and stated that finding him was a top priority.

The details surrounding Haynes' arrest in Oxon Hill, Maryland, remain unclear. The Metropolitan Police Department did not provide any information regarding why he was in that location. However, the U.S. Marshals Service confirmed that Haynes was apprehended "without incident."

The escape and subsequent manhunt caused significant disruption, with George Washington University canceling activities and implementing a lockdown. A blurry photo of Haynes on the run, still wearing the handcuff, was released by officials, and the reward for information on his whereabouts was announced. It is currently unknown if anyone provided information that led to his recapture and if they will be eligible for the reward.

Haynes has now been transferred to the custody of the Washington Metropolitan Police Department, where he will face charges for his escape and the murder of Brent Hayward. It is unclear if a court appearance has been scheduled or if Haynes has legal representation.

This capture comes in the wake of another high-profile manhunt for escaped murder convict Danelo Cavalcante, who was recaptured in Pennsylvania on September 13. The successful apprehension of both fugitives highlights the dedication and collaboration of law enforcement agencies in bringing dangerous criminals to justice.
