Sailor miraculously rescued after two weeks lost at sea

07:54 28.10.2023

A man who had been missing at sea for nearly two weeks was miraculously found alive on Thursday by a Canadian fishing boat in a life raft in Canadian waters, approximately 70 miles northwest of Cape Flattery, Washington. The U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson, Petty Officer Steve Strohmaier, described the discovery as incredible and miraculous, as the man had been floating in the vast ocean for several days with little hope of being rescued. Strohmaier emphasized that it is rare for a vessel to pass by in such remote areas.

The Coast Guard was first alerted to the missing fishing vessel on Sunday afternoon. The boat, named "Evening," had departed from Westport, Washington, on October 12 and was scheduled to return on October 15. However, a week later, the Coast Guard was informed of the vessel's absence.

The man was discovered by a Canadian fishing boat in Canadian waters, and the crew immediately contacted the Canadian Coast Guard for assistance. The Canadian Coast Guard then took the man back to shore, where he was transferred to a hospital and reported to be in stable condition.

While one person has been found, another individual remains missing, and the incident is currently under investigation by the U.S. Coast Guard. Strohmaier stated that future search efforts will depend on gathering more information, including eyewitness accounts and statements from the rescued man.

The U.S. Coast Guard had initially posted about the search for the missing vessel on social media, but on Wednesday, they announced the suspension of the search due to lack of new information. The Coast Guard extended condolences to the families of the missing mariners.

According to the fishermen who found the man, he had been surviving on salmon during his thirteen days alone at sea. Ryan Planes, one of the good Samaritans, described the emotional moment when they pulled him on board their boat. The rescued man was reported to have consumed three bottles of water and was visibly hungry.

The Canadian Coast Guard and a Canadian rescue agency aided in the transfer of the rescued man to shore. He remains in stable condition. The search for the missing second individual continues, as officials work to determine the circumstances of their disappearance.
