Israeli tanks encircle Gaza hospital, gunfire kills and wounds dozens

Israeli Tanks Surround Hospital in North Gaza, Killing 12 Palestinians

In a devastating turn of events, Israeli tanks have surrounded the Indonesian Hospital in north Gaza, resulting in the deaths of at least 12 Palestinians and leaving dozens wounded, according to health officials. The hospital, located in the town of Beit Lahia, has been under fire from Israeli forces, with reports that artillery fire has hit the facility.

The Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that the hospital had been targeted by Israeli tanks, and health officials in Gaza have expressed concern over the safety of the patients, staff, and displaced residents who have sought refuge in the hospital. Efforts are being made to evacuate civilians from harm's way, but the situation is dire as communication with the hospital has been severely limited.

Nahed Abu Taaema, director of Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, expressed his concern for the fate of those trapped in the Indonesian Hospital. "No ambulances can reach them, and we're afraid the wounded will die," he said. The hospital staff has denied the presence of armed militants on the premises, refuting Israeli claims that Hamas is using hospitals as human shields.

The Indonesian Hospital, which was established in 2016 with funding from Indonesian organizations, has largely ceased operations due to the ongoing conflict but continues to provide shelter for patients, staff, and displaced residents. Israel has ordered the complete evacuation of the northern half of Gaza, but thousands of civilians remain, seeking shelter in hospitals.

Fuel and medicine shortages have become critical across the entire Gaza Strip due to Israel's six-week-long siege. The situation has become dire, as witnesses have reported heavy fighting between Hamas gunmen and Israeli forces in the Jabalia refugee camp, a significant stronghold for militants, according to Israeli officials.

Further south in Rafah, near the border with Egypt, at least 14 Palestinians were killed in two Israeli airstrikes on houses. Hundreds of thousands of Gazans who fled the northern part of the enclave are now seeking shelter in southern areas, including Rafah.

Despite the ongoing fighting, there are indications of a possible pause in hostilities. U.S. and Israeli officials have stated that a Qatari-mediated deal to free some of the hostages held in the Palestinian enclave and temporarily pause fighting to enable aid deliveries is edging closer. The hostages, numbering around 240, were taken during a deadly cross-border attack by Hamas terrorists on October 7.

Since the attack, Gaza's Hamas-run government has reported that at least 13,000 Palestinians, including 5,500 children, have been killed by relentless Israeli bombardment. The United Nations has confirmed that two-thirds of Gaza's 2.3 million population have been made homeless.

Israeli tanks and troops entered Gaza late last month and have since seized wide areas of the north and northwest, as well as the east around Gaza City. However, Hamas and local witnesses claim that militants are waging guerrilla-style warfare in pockets of the congested, urbanized north, including parts of Gaza City and the Jabalia and Beach refugee camps.

Arab and Muslim ministers in Beijing have joined international calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, as they visit major world capitals to push for an end to the fighting and allow humanitarian aid deliveries to reach the affected civilians.

Despite hopes for a possible hostage release deal, the fighting continues to take a toll on Gaza's traumatized population. Many have been forced to constantly move from one area to another in an attempt to find safety from the violence. The death toll on both sides continues to rise, with 64 Israeli soldiers having lost their lives in the conflict so far.
