Flight recorder recovered from Navy spy plane that overshot runway in Hawaii

06:48 26.11.2023

A U.S. Navy surveillance plane, a P-8A, overshot a runway and landed in Kaneohe Bay in Hawaii. The incident occurred during rainy weather and reduced visibility, with only one mile of visibility reported by a meteorologist at the time. The large aircraft, measuring about 130ft (40m) long, had nine people on board, including three pilots and six crew members. Fortunately, all individuals were able to evacuate the plane safely, and no injuries were reported.

The Navy's Aircraft Mishap Board is currently conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the accident and any contributing factors. The flight data recorder, which contains crucial information on flight parameters such as altitude and airspeed, has been retrieved by sailors from a mobile diving and salvage unit. This data will assist in the investigation, providing insights into what may have led to the incident.

Marine Corps Base Hawaii, located approximately 10 miles from Honolulu on Oahu, is home to about 9,300 military personnel and 5,100 family members. The base houses various military installations, including the one where the plane overshot the runway. Residents in the area have expressed concerns about potential coral reef damage and the presence of fuel or other chemicals in the water, as Kaneohe Bay is known for its coral reefs and is a breeding ground for hammerhead sharks. To mitigate these concerns, containment booms and absorbent materials have been placed around the aircraft, and the area is being closely monitored by specialists 24 hours a day.

The P-8A plane, manufactured by Boeing, is commonly used for submarine searches, reconnaissance, and intelligence gathering. It belongs to the Skinny Dragons of Patrol Squadron 4, stationed at Whidbey Island in Washington state. Another crew from the VP-40 Fighting Marlins, also from Washington state, has arrived in Hawaii to assume homeland defense coverage in place of the affected crew.

As the military plans for the removal of the aircraft from Kaneohe Bay, a hydrographic survey is being conducted to assess its structural integrity and minimize the impact on the coral and marine environment. Additionally, experts have noted that the shorter runway at the base, combined with adverse weather conditions and winds, could have contributed to the incident. The Navy is actively working to address concerns raised by the local community and ensure the safe and efficient removal of the aircraft from the bay.
