Double Trouble: Alex Murdaugh Faces Sentencing for Financial Crimes After Murder Conviction

12:32 28.11.2023

Former South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh, who is currently serving two life sentences for the murders of his wife and son, is facing sentencing on Tuesday for nearly two dozen state financial crimes. The charges against Murdaugh include money laundering, breach of trust, conspiracy, forgery, and tax evasion. This comes after Murdaugh pleaded guilty earlier this month in a plea deal that will ensure he remains in state prison for a significant amount of time.

Prosecutor Creighton Waters of the South Carolina Attorney General's Office described the charges against Murdaugh in detail during a court hearing on November 17. The schemes he carried out defrauded his clients, law firm partners, and other victims of millions of dollars. Murdaugh admitted to the crimes and expressed his guilt, stating, "I agree that I wrongly took all of that money and did all of those crimes. I disagree with some of the narrative." He also expressed relief at finally being able to plead guilty.

The plea deal will still need to be approved by Judge Clifton Newman, who has stated that his acceptance will depend on whether it meets all requirements from the state's Victims' Bill of Rights. While Murdaugh's guilty plea brings some closure for his financial victims, his legal troubles may not be over. He also pleaded guilty to federal charges in September, which accused him of stealing millions of dollars from his clients. Sentencing for those charges has not yet been determined.

In addition to his financial crimes, Murdaugh is seeking a new trial for the murders of his wife and son. His defense team has alleged that the jury was tampered with by Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill. The appeal is currently on hold while this motion is being pursued.

Murdaugh's sentencing on Tuesday will provide an opportunity for his victims to confront him in court. Attorneys representing some of the victims have expressed that the guilty plea brings justice to the case and allows the victims to begin the healing process. However, the overall legal saga surrounding Murdaugh may continue to unfold as he faces potential appeals and further legal proceedings.
