Greta Gerwig defies partner to take on "Barbie" movie

20:43 03.12.2023

Gerwig's approach to the Barbie movie was to create a feminist utopia within Barbie Land, where every woman is Barbie and every Ken is just an accessory. However, the film also tackles an existential crisis in Barbie Land that sends Barbie and Ken into the real world. In the real world, Ken discovers patriarchy and ends up liking it, sparking a debate about whether the film is anti-man.

Despite the potential backlash, Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach, who joined the project after being asked by actress Margot Robbie, were determined to make the film. Baumbach initially had reservations about the lack of character and story in the Barbie concept, but Gerwig convinced him that they could create something meaningful. They wrote the screenplay at home during the pandemic, entertaining each other and injecting some of their own insanity into the movie.

When it came to actually making the film, Gerwig convinced the studio to build a technicolor soundstage, complete with a painted sky and backdrop, to give the movie a distinctly artificial and fake look. They shot the film in just one day, and Gerwig admits that she still can't believe anyone let her make the movie.

Throughout her career, Gerwig has demonstrated a fearless approach to filmmaking. She went from being an indie darling to a breakout director with Lady Bird and "Little Women," both of which garnered her Oscar nominations. Now, she's taking on the challenge of directing and writing two reboots of "The Chronicles of Narnia," a beloved franchise that she admits is giving her nightmares.

Gerwig's ability to coax people out of their comfort zones is evident in her directing style. She is known for doing numerous takes and striving for perfection. Her soul-baring monologues, which she pens herself, are a signature element of her films.

Overall, Gerwig's success as a filmmaker, particularly as the first woman to solo-direct a billion-dollar movie, is a testament to her talent and determination. From her humble beginnings in community theater to her groundbreaking work in Hollywood, Gerwig continues to push boundaries and challenge expectations in the industry.
