Alabama knocks off Georgia in SEC championship to send CFP into chaos scenario

00:15 04.12.2023

In a stunning upset, the Alabama Crimson Tide handed the top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs their first loss in nearly two years, snapping their 29-game winning streak. The victory not only secured Alabama's 30th Southeastern Conference (SEC) championship but also put them in contention for a spot in the College Football Playoff (CFP). Jalen Milroe, the quarterback who played a crucial role in the Crimson Tide's turnaround, posed a pointed question to the committee that will decide the playoff teams: "Georgia is number one, right? We just beat the number one team. What do you consider us?"

Alabama, currently ranked eighth in both the AP poll and the most recent CFP rankings, would need to make a significant leap to claim a spot in the four-team playoff. Their earlier loss to Texas, who is currently ranked seventh, adds to the challenge. However, with their impressive victory over Georgia, the selection committee may view Alabama favorably.

On the other hand, Georgia now faces the possibility of their bid for a third straight national title being over. Coach Kirby Smart dismissed the notion that his team squandered their chance at making history, asserting that the best four teams should be selected for the playoff. He believes that Georgia is indeed one of the best four teams and hopes that their dominance over the past two seasons will persuade the committee to give them another opportunity.

The game itself showcased Alabama's remarkable performance and resilience. After a slow start, Milroe, who had been benched earlier in the season, threw a pair of touchdown passes and led the offense effectively. Alabama's defense also played a crucial role, dominating much of the game and holding Georgia to just 78 rushing yards. The win marked Alabama's 11th consecutive victory and demonstrated their ability to compete against any team.

Despite a valiant effort by Georgia to close the gap in the second half, Alabama held on for the 27-24 victory. Milroe's impressive 30-yard run towards the end of the game helped secure their win as he wisely went down inbounds to keep the clock running.

For Alabama coach Nick Saban, the victory was a testament to the team's unity and determination. He expressed his pride in the players, stating that he had never been prouder of a group of guys. Saban, who already holds a record seven national titles, may have the opportunity to add to his legacy with another championship.

Looking ahead, the fate of both Alabama and Georgia rests in the hands of the CFP selection committee, which will announce the playoff teams on Sunday. The committee's decision will determine if Alabama's victory is enough to secure them a spot in the playoff and whether Georgia will have a chance at a do-over.
