"S-Town" Podcast Star Tyler Goodson Shot Dead in Police Standoff

14:00 05.12.2023

In a tragic turn of events, Joseph Tyler Goodson, a man featured on the hit podcast "S-Town," was shot and killed by police during a standoff in Woodstock, Alabama over the weekend. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) reported that Goodson, 32, barricaded himself inside a house and brandished a gun at officers, prompting them to fire their weapons. The Woodstock Police Department initially responded to a "call for service" early Sunday, although it remains unclear what exactly prompted the call. Multiple law enforcement agencies swiftly descended on the scene.

Just hours before his death, at around 1:39 a.m. on Sunday, Goodson posted a haunting message on Facebook that read, "police bout [sic] to shoot me down in my own yard." The chilling post added to the already tense situation and raised concerns about Goodson's state of mind prior to the standoff. The ALEA is currently reviewing the shooting and will provide their findings to the Bibb County district attorney.

Goodson rose to national fame in 2017 as one of the main characters in the podcast "S-Town." The show, produced by the team behind Serial and "This American Life," delved into the life of Woodstock native John B. McLemore and his complicated relationship with the town. McLemore, an eccentric antique clock restorer, tragically died by suicide in 2015, two years before the podcast aired. Goodson appeared on the podcast as one of Woodstock's residents and was portrayed as a mentee of McLemore's.

In the podcast, Goodson spoke about his deep connection with McLemore, referring to him as the only father figure he ever had. However, following the release of the podcast, Goodson's life seemed to spiral into chaos. In June 2017, he pleaded guilty to multiple counts of burglary and theft for taking items from McLemore's property after his death. Goodson claimed that McLemore had left the items, including cars and tattoo equipment, to him. He ultimately received a suspended sentence that included five years of probation.

Woodstock, a small town with a population of about 1,500, is now grappling with the loss of Goodson and seeking answers about the circumstances surrounding his death. Mayor Jeff Dodson expressed his condolences and urged the public to remember Goodson as more than just a character from the podcast. Goodson leaves behind five children.

The podcast S-Town gained widespread acclaim and was downloaded over 100 million times since its release. It won a Peabody Award and captivated audiences with its exploration of McLemore's life and the mysterious events surrounding Woodstock. The podcast shed light on the dark underbelly of the town and left a lasting impact on both the community and the individuals featured in it.

Despite its success, Goodson expressed mixed feelings about the podcast's effect on his life. In a 2017 interview, he admitted that it brought significant attention to him and Woodstock but claimed it hadn't done him any favors. The podcast's executive producer, Julie Snyder, declined to comment on the tragedy.

As the investigation into Goodson's death continues, the Woodstock community mourns the loss of a beloved father, son, brother, and friend. The town, as well as fans of the podcast, anxiously await the release of more details surrounding this tragic incident.
