Bronx Building Partially Collapses, Causing Panic and Destruction

17:36 11.12.2023

In a shocking incident that took place on Monday afternoon, part of a six-story building in the Morris Heights neighborhood of the Bronx collapsed. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of injuries, as confirmed by both the Fire Department and the Police Department. However, the initial photographs and videos of the scene revealed the extent of the damage, with rooms at the corner of the 46-unit building exposed, appearing as if the walls had been torn off. The chaotic scene displayed evidence of the lives disrupted by the collapse, with personal belongings scattered amidst the tangled mess of metal and wood.

Down on the street below, a jumble of walls and bricks lay scattered beneath the exposed apartments, now exposed to the cold afternoon air. The Fire Department, cautioning that their investigation was still in its preliminary stages, expressed concerns about the possibility of people being trapped within the wreckage. Laura Kavanagh, the fire commissioner, took to Twitter to assure the public that firefighters were diligently searching for any potential victims.

City building records have revealed that questions regarding the safety of the building have been raised for years. The ground floor of the building houses several stores, including a market situated at the corner of West Burnside Avenue and Phelan Place. Just last month, the Department of Buildings issued a $2,400 fine to the building's owner for "deteriorated and broken mudsills" at the base of the property's scaffolding. The fine explicitly stated that the damage could adversely impact the building's structural stability, potentially resulting in a collapse.

The building in question is owned by a limited liability company called 1915 Realty, which acquired the property in 2004 for a sum of $3 million, according to records. Following Monday's collapse, the city's Emergency Management Department swiftly requested a structural stability inspection of the site. In 2020, the building's brick facade was deemed unsafe after a mandatory inspection conducted by a structural engineer uncovered "significant masonry damage throughout the facade," including cracks in the brickwork. The owner was promptly ordered to undertake the necessary repairs, though it remains unclear whether these repairs had been completed prior to the collapse.

As emergency responders diligently work at the scene, the city remains on high alert. The New York City Emergency Management Department has urged residents to stay away from the affected area while they conduct their investigations and stabilization efforts. The FDNY has shut off all utilities at the building to ensure safety.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of regular inspections and necessary maintenance to ensure the structural integrity of buildings. The investigation into the cause of the collapse is ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available. Maria Cramer contributed to the reporting of this developing story.
