Bull on the Loose Disrupts New Jersey Commuters

00:04 15.12.2023

The ruddy brown bull, with long, dark-tipped horns, caused quite a commotion as it stood defiantly on the tracks, halting train traffic between New Jersey and New York City for nearly an hour. People traveling between the two states were left stranded and frustrated as authorities scrambled to resolve the situation.

The Newark Public Safety Director, Fritz Frage, stated that the police received a call around 10:46 a.m. alerting them to the loose bull behind a building on Frelinghuysen Avenue near Victoria Street. In response, both the Newark Police Emergency Services Unit and the Port Authority Police Department sprang into action, working together to locate and contain the animal. Eventually, they managed to confine the bull inside a fenced lot while awaiting the arrival of a local animal sanctuary to safely retrieve it.

NJ Transit, quick to update passengers on the situation, posted a photo of the bull on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), along with an announcement that rail service would experience delays of up to 45 minutes between Newark Penn and PSNY due to police activity near Newark Penn Station. To accommodate affected commuters, NJ Transit cross-honored rail tickets and passes with the PATH train at Hoboken, Newark Penn Station, and 33rd Street in Manhattan.

Thankfully, just before noon, NJ Transit Police announced that the bull had been successfully removed from the tracks, allowing trains to resume their journeys. However, delays persisted, causing further inconvenience to travelers.

The circumstances surrounding how the bull became loose and who its owner is remained unclear at the time of the incident. The Associated Press reported that further details about the bull's escapade through Newark were not immediately available. This incident, however, is not the first time a bull has caused chaos in the city. In 2006, authorities spent 10 hours capturing a bull roaming around Newark, while two years prior to that, a steer escaped from a slaughterhouse and wandered the streets before being sent to a sanctuary.

In a strange twist of events earlier this year, a Brooklyn pizzeria captured surveillance footage of a cow making a daring escape from a slaughterhouse, running through the streets. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during Thursday's bull incident, according to the Newark police.

The news of the bull's escapade quickly spread on social media, with videos and photos of the animal running through the station going viral. Passengers shared their experiences and frustrations, with many expressing disbelief at the unusual situation. One passenger captured a photo of the bull pausing on the tracks to look around, captioning it with, "Can't make this stuff up. Another day on the railroad."

The PATH train also joined in on the social media buzz, posting a picture of the bull alongside a tongue-in-cheek message: "We're bullish on keeping you moving, but this situation was bull!"

NBC New York reported that journalist Adam Harding managed to capture photos of the bull being tied up and loaded into a police truck. Witnesses on the scene described the efforts of the police to capture the animal, revealing that they had to run around to avoid its menacing horns. One witness, Chrishetce Robinson, expressed her astonishment at seeing a bull in real life, stating, "It was amazing because I've never seen that in real life. I've finally seen a real bull instead of like on the Animal Planet channel. It was shocking."

Amid the chaos caused by the bull's unexpected appearance, train operators and authorities worked tirelessly to restore normalcy to the rail service. However, the incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of city life and the occasional encounters with unexpected wildlife.
