Fishermen's discovery leads to miraculous rescue of trapped Indiana driver

03:04 27.12.2023

Two Indiana fishermen, Mario Garcia and his son-in-law Nivardo Delatorre, made a startling discovery on Tuesday when they stumbled upon a wrecked pickup truck underneath a bridge over Salt Creek near Portage, Indiana. The pair had been scouting the area for potential fishing spots when something shiny in the distance caught their attention. Curiosity led them to investigate further and they found a mangled vehicle with what appeared to be a lifeless body inside.

Garcia, thinking it was a fatal accident, moved an airbag out of the way and touched the man's shoulder when suddenly, the man woke up. Startled but determined to help, Garcia asked Delatorre to call for help while they stayed with the injured man. The man, identified as 27-year-old Matthew R. Reum of Mishawaka, had been trapped in the wreckage for nearly a week and was suffering from severe, potentially life-threatening injuries.

Reum survived in part by drinking rainwater, as he was unable to reach his phone to call for help. He told the fishermen that he had tried yelling and screaming for help, but nobody had heard him. The area where the truck crashed was not visible from the bridge, so no reports of the accident had been made. Temperatures in Porter County had dropped to as low as 29 degrees in recent days, making it even more miraculous that Reum had survived.

Rescuers faced challenges in reaching the wreckage due to the difficult terrain and took hours to free Reum from the crushed truck. The westbound lanes of I-94 were closed as crews worked to transport him to a helicopter, which then took him to the hospital for treatment. State Police Sgt. Glen Fifield stated that if the fishermen had not found Reum when they did, he likely would not have survived the night.

The cause of the crash is still unknown, but it appears that Reum's truck missed a guardrail and went airborne before rolling down into the creek and coming to rest under the bridge. The fishermen, Garcia and Delatorre, expressed their gratitude for finding Reum and helping him in his time of need. Garcia mentioned that they were fortunate to have followed their curiosity and stumbled upon the man, as they were initially considering skipping their fishing trip that day.

Overall, the discovery and rescue of Matthew Reum have been deemed nothing short of a miracle by the Indiana State Police. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of being vigilant and responsive to unusual circumstances, as it can make a significant difference in someone's life.
