Prominent figures targeted in dangerous trend of 'swatting' with false shooting reports

16:45 01.01.2024

In a disturbing trend of swatting incidents targeting high-profile individuals, billionaire George Soros' luxurious Southampton estate became the latest victim over the weekend. On Saturday evening, Southampton police received a 911 call from an unidentified individual claiming to have shot his wife at the South Shore manse and threatening to shoot himself. Concerned for the safety of the occupants, officers rushed to the scene, only to discover that the call was a hoax.

Southampton Police Detective Herman Lamison confirmed that the incident occurred at Soros' Long Island estate on Old Town Road. While it remains unclear whether Soros or any members of his family were present at the time, the false report undoubtedly caused a significant disruption and concern for their safety.

This incident is part of a disturbing pattern of swatting incidents targeting high-profile individuals. Just one day before Soros' estate was targeted, legal scholar Johnathan Turley, a professor at George Washington University, also fell victim to a similar prank. A bogus 911 call falsely reporting a shooting at Turley's Virginia home prompted law enforcement to respond swiftly. Turley expressed his frustration, stating, "It is regrettably a manifestation of our age of rage." He commended the Fairfax police officers for their professionalism and support during the incident.

The list of victims of these swatting incidents continues to grow. On Christmas Day, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's home in Georgia was targeted, with a call claiming that someone had been shot at her address. This was followed by four other Georgia lawmakers, including Republican state Sens. John Albers, Kay Kirkpatrick, Clint Dixon, and Democrat Kim Jackson, who also fell victim to the same prank.

The Christmas Day spree extended beyond Georgia, with upstate New York GOP Rep. Brandon Williams and Ohio Republican US Rep. Kevin Miller also experiencing similar incidents. The following day, Georgia GOP Lt. Gov. Burt Jones received a false bomb threat, while US Rep. Rick Scott from Florida had police rush to his Naples home in response to another fake call.

The trend is not limited to politicians alone. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, a Democrat, was targeted two weeks after hosting a controversial holiday party for non-white city council members. Even legal scholar Turley, who had just experienced a swatting incident, spoke out against the crime during an interview with Fox News Digital.

The prevalence of these swatting incidents highlights the need for stronger deterrents against such crimes. As Turley pointed out, the lack of consequences for these false reports allows the trend to continue and puts innocent individuals at risk. Law enforcement agencies are working diligently to investigate these incidents and bring the perpetrators to justice.
