The best subway systems of 2023

21:23 03.01.2024

In a recent study, the world's best subway systems have been revealed, with a focus on the passenger experience. Commuters and tourists alike may have experienced the convenience and efficiency of these subway systems, and now the rankings are in.

Using a weighted ranking system that takes into account eight important factors, such as accessibility, convenience, pet-friendliness, connectivity, comfort, value for money, infrastructure, and capacity, the top subway systems have been identified.

Surprisingly, the Seoul Subway in South Korea topped the overall ranking, surpassing other major cities around the globe. However, when it comes to the busiest subway systems in terms of annual passengers, Beijing takes the lead, carrying over 38 billion passengers each year. On the other hand, the Madrid Metro offers a more comfortable journey with just over 657 million passengers annually.

Accessibility is an essential aspect of any transit system, and unfortunately, some of the busiest subways still have room for improvement. In terms of accessibility, Seoul takes the top spot, followed by Madrid and Shanghai. However, both the London Underground and Paris Metro have a lot of work to do in this area.

When it comes to convenience, which includes hours of operation and contactless payment options, travelers can rely on the subway systems in Tokyo, Shanghai, and Seoul to provide a seamless experience. On the other hand, the Moscow Metro and New York Subway have room for improvement.

Value for money is another important factor for commuters. The Mexico City Metro stands out as the system offering the best value, with a single ride costing just 5 pesos (£0.20) and a monthly ticket priced at £5.00. However, the London Underground, New York Subway, and Beijing Subway are considered the most expensive.

Comfort is a significant consideration for passengers, and the London Underground tops the list in this category. With more toilets per passenger and ventilation systems at most stations, London commuters can enjoy a comfortable journey. Tokyo and Paris also scored well in terms of comfort, while the Moscow Metro and Mexico City Metro fell short.

Infrastructure plays a crucial role in the overall subway experience. Although newer doesn't always mean better, it is an important factor to consider. The age of the system, kilometers of track, and average speed were among the parameters studied. In this regard, both the Moscow Metro and New York Subway scored lower than other systems.

It's clear that the Seoul Subway has emerged as the top choice for travelers in terms of overall ranking, accessibility, and connectivity. However, the New York Subway have some work to do to catch up with their global counterparts. As cities continue to improve their subway systems, commuters and visitors will benefit from enhanced accessibility, convenience, comfort, and value for their money.
