Defendant's shocking attack on Nevada judge during sentencing in Vegas courtroom

03:56 04.01.2024

In a shocking incident at the Regional Justice Center in Las Vegas, a defendant, identified as Deobra Delone Redden, launched a violent attack on Clark County District Judge Mary Kay Holthus. The incident, which occurred during a court hearing, was captured on video and showed Redden leaping over a court bench and landing on top of the judge.

Prior to the attack, Redden had pleaded with Judge Holthus to show leniency during his sentencing for a previous attempted assault. He claimed that he was not a rebellious person and described himself as someone who always tries to do the right thing. However, as the judge made it clear that she intended to send him to prison and the court officer moved to handcuff him, Redden became agitated, yelled expletives, and charged forward.

The violent altercation that followed involved several court and jail officers, as well as courtroom staff members. They wrestled Redden to the floor behind the judge's bench, with some individuals seen throwing punches during the brawl. Judge Holthus fell back from her seat against a wall during the attack and sustained injuries. However, she did not require hospitalization.

A court official who came to the judge's aid was also injured and had to be taken to the hospital for treatment. He suffered a gash on his forehead and a dislocated shoulder. Redden was eventually subdued and arrested by authorities. He was taken into custody at the Clark County Detention Center, where he now faces multiple new charges, including battery on a protected person, referring to the judge and court officers.

Records indicate that Redden had initially been in court for allegations of attacking a person with a baseball bat the previous year. He had been evaluated and found mentally competent to stand trial before pleading guilty to a reduced charge of attempted battery causing substantial bodily harm in November. Redden had a prior conviction for domestic battery and had served time in prison.

Following the incident, court spokesperson Mary Ann Price released a statement, stating that officials were reviewing all protocols to ensure the safety of the judiciary, the public, and court employees. Redden's defense lawyer, Caesar Almase, did not respond to requests for comment.

The attack on Judge Holthus has raised concerns about courtroom security and the safety of judges and court personnel. The incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers faced by those working within the justice system and the need for enhanced security measures to protect them.
