Trump's testimony in defamation trial raises questions

11:21 22.01.2024

Former U.S. President Donald Trump is making headlines once again as he prepares to leave the campaign trail and head back to a New York courtroom. This time, he is set to testify against awarding more damages to E. Jean Carroll, a woman who has accused him of sexually abusing her decades ago in the dressing room of a department store.

Trump, who is currently the leading candidate for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, has consistently dismissed Carroll's claims both on social media and at campaign events. However, U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan has made it clear that if Trump takes the stand, he cannot dispute Carroll's account of the attack. This ruling is based on a previous case in which a jury determined that Trump had indeed sexually abused Carroll during a chance encounter at the upscale Bergdorf Goodman store. In that case, Carroll was awarded $5 million in damages.

The current trial focuses on comments made by Trump in 2019, shortly after Carroll published a book detailing her accusations. At the time, Trump vehemently denied the allegations, stating that Carroll was "totally lying" and that he couldn't have assaulted her because she was not his "type." The nine-member jury tasked with deciding the damages Carroll is entitled to will only consider Trump's 2019 comments.

As Trump continues his campaign swings through New Hampshire, where he holds a substantial lead over his remaining challenger Nikki Haley, he has treated the court case as another opportunity to rally his supporters. Holding news conferences at the end of each day, he has launched scathing attacks against Carroll and Judge Kaplan, accusing them of bias and claiming that law enforcement is being weaponized against him.

"They are weaponizing law enforcement at a level like never before," Trump declared at a recent New Hampshire rally. He also made it clear that he will not back down, stating, "You know where I'm going to be."

Carroll, now 80 years old, testified last week, highlighting the impact Trump's comments had on her. She defiantly stated, "It means I'm too ugly to assault."

With the limitations placed on his testimony, it remains uncertain how Trump will defend himself in court. Nevertheless, as the trial unfolds, all eyes are on the former president and the potential consequences he may face in relation to Carroll's accusations.
