Yellen Optimistic About US-China Ties After Beijing Visit

14:03 12.07.2023

U.S. climate envoy John Kerry is set to visit China from Monday to Thursday, becoming the third senior official from the Biden administration to make the trip in recent weeks. The visits by Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Secretary of State Antony Blinken were part of the administration"s efforts to repair ties with Beijing, which have been strained over various issues including national security, human rights, and trade tariffs. Kerry"s visit aims to restart global warming negotiations between the two countries, as they are the world"s largest polluters and have previously cooperated on climate change, leading to the 2015 Paris climate accord. During his trip, Kerry plans to meet with his Chinese counterpart Xie Zhenhua and other high-level officials. The discussions will focus on finding common ground and genuine cooperation to address the global climate crisis. However, there are deep divisions between the U.S. and China regarding the speed at which each country should reduce fossil fuel emissions. While the U.S. has pledged to cut emissions by half by 2030, China"s emissions continue to grow, although President Xi Jinping has committed to peaking carbon pollution by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. Republicans have criticized Kerry"s trip, accusing him of making "closed-door deals" with the Chinese and undermining U.S. interests. However, Kerry emphasizes the importance of China"s collaboration in combating climate change, urging them to accelerate the phase-out of coal, address deforestation, and reduce emissions of methane. The talks between the U.S. and China on climate change come after Yellen"s direct and productive discussions with top Chinese officials, which she described as helping to put the relationship between the two countries on a "surer footing." Yellen acknowledged that significant disagreements remain, particularly regarding unfair economic practices and Beijing"s punitive actions against U.S. firms. Despite these differences, she believes that the world is big enough for both countries to thrive and that the Biden administration does not view the relationship through the frame of great power conflict. The U.S. is making diplomatic efforts to stabilize its relationship with China, as the two countries" rivalry has affected companies and trade ties and drawn in their allies. A possible meeting between President Biden and President Xi Jinping is being considered for later this year, potentially at the Group of 20 summit in September or the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation gathering in November. Overall, the visits by senior U.S. officials to China have covered a range of topics but have not yet resulted in clear breakthroughs. The success of Kerry"s trip in restarting global warming negotiations and fostering cooperation on climate change will be crucial for addressing the urgent challenge of the global climate crisis.
