Prison Guard Fired as Convicted Murderer Escapes in Pennsylvania

02:52 09.09.2023

A Pennsylvania prison guard has been fired after missing convicted killer Danelo Cavalcante's escape from Chester County Prison. The unnamed guard, who had worked at the prison for 18 years, was on duty in the watchtower when Cavalcante was seen on surveillance video scaling a wall in the exercise yard. Chester County Spokesperson Michelle Bjork confirmed the termination, stating that the guard was an 18-year veteran of the prison. Cavalcante then proceeded to push through razor wire, run across the roof, scale another fence, and push through more razor wire before successfully leaving the prison.

Cavalcante, who was convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend in 2021 and sentenced to life in prison, remains at large. During a press conference, Lt. Col. George Bivens of the Pennsylvania State Police revealed that Cavalcante was spotted on a trail camera at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Bivens expressed concern over Cavalcante's level of desperation and emphasized his dangerous nature, noting that he had previously murdered two individuals in a brutal manner.

Authorities continued their search for Cavalcante, and on Friday, he was spotted again just north of Longwood Gardens on E. Street Rd and Conservatory Rd. As a result, Longwood Gardens closed until further notice. The escape resembled another incident at the same prison in May, when inmate Igor Bolt briefly escaped but was quickly apprehended. Measures were taken after Bolt's escape to enhance security, including the addition of more razor wire.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, Cavalcante was seen by an individual running on Friday afternoon, and the U.S. Marshals Service revealed that he is also wanted for a homicide in Brazil. Law enforcement officers were stationed on a bridge overlooking a small ravine, armed with rifles pointed into it. The search for Cavalcante involves approximately 400 law enforcement personnel.

The fired prison guard's termination follows the escape and has raised concerns about the effectiveness of prison security. The guard's identity remains unknown, but it is known that they had been a long-serving member of the prison staff. The escape has prompted a thorough examination of the prison's security protocols.

Cavalcante's escape has raised alarm among residents and law enforcement, with the fear that he may commit further violent acts. Police suspect that he is within the perimeter of Routes 926 and 52, Hillendale Road, and Creek Road. He has been spotted eight times thus far, and a reward of up to $20,000 is being offered for information leading to his apprehension.

The search for Cavalcante remains ongoing, and updates will be provided as the situation develops.
