Tragic Loss: Ohio Homecoming Queen Candidate Dies on Football Field

14:18 03.10.2023

A 17-year-old Ohio girl, Breanne McKean, tragically died after collapsing on the football field during homecoming festivities at Mapleton High School. McKean, a senior and a contender for homecoming queen, collapsed shortly after being announced as a candidate. The cause of her collapse is still unknown. The Mapleton Local School District expressed their condolences to McKean's family, friends, and the Mapleton community in a statement on Facebook. The football game was suspended at halftime and the homecoming dance, where a queen would have been selected, was canceled. Additionally, all athletic events for Mapleton High School were canceled through Wednesday.

According to Mapleton High School Principal Corey Kline, McKean was a student athlete who participated in volleyball, basketball, and softball. She was described by the school district as funny, caring, and always full of life. Kline praised McKean's vibrant personality and her ability to make everyone feel included. The school district created a memorial scholarship in her honor and started an apparel fundraiser to support her family during this difficult time.

Grief counselors were made available for students and staff at the high school on Monday to provide comfort and support. A memorial service to honor McKean's legacy will also be held in Ashland, Ohio on Saturday.

Breanne McKean's father, Tim McKean, who is the high school athletic director, spoke about his daughter's sudden passing. He shared that she had just been introduced as a homecoming queen candidate when she collapsed and passed away shortly afterward at Ashland Hospital. Tim McKean described his daughter as everything to their family and mentioned her accomplishments in multiple sports.

The football game between Mapleton and South Central high school was halted after halftime and both teams were informed of the tragedy. McKean's cause of death remains undetermined, and her body has been transported for an autopsy. The Ashland County Coroner's Office is handling the investigation.

The Mapleton community and surrounding school districts have shown an outpouring of support, with the South Central community, administration, coaches, players, and fans offering their compassion and assistance. The volleyball team, of which McKean was a member, canceled their upcoming games and a youth volleyball camp as they mourned the loss. They asked for prayers for the McKean family, the volleyball team, and the entire Mapleton community.
