Some in Biden's staff worry his dog only has 'appetite' for Secret Service members

In recent weeks, the Biden family's two German Shepherds, Commander and Major, have been making headlines due to their aggressive behavior and multiple biting incidents. According to Axios, the dogs have reportedly bitten or nipped members of the White House residence staff as well as Secret Service agents. Commander, who was initially removed from the White House campus, has been involved in eleven known biting incidents, leading to his eventual banishment from the premises.

The severity of the incidents is evident in the case of a Secret Service agent who was bitten on his thigh and arm by Commander in late September, resulting in his hospitalization. The incident has raised concerns among President Joe Biden's staff about the safety of working with the dog. While some staff members have expressed their affection for Commander, describing him as friendly, others have voiced their worries and theories about his specific targeting of Secret Service officers.

One theory suggests that the stressful and high-security environment of the White House could be contributing to Commander's aggression. According to a former White House official, the presence of armed and suspicious-looking individuals throughout the premises might be overwhelming for the dog. Another theory revolves around how staff members interact with Commander, with some suggesting that Secret Service agents' less warm and fuzzy demeanors could be triggering the dog's aggressive behavior.

The First Family is aware of the ongoing issue and has been working to address it. A spokesperson for First Lady Jill Biden acknowledged the challenges of the White House environment for family pets and expressed gratitude to the Secret Service and Executive Residence staff for their efforts to ensure everyone's safety. The Bidens are said to be investing in additional training for Commander, although its effectiveness remains uncertain.

Despite these efforts, there are doubts among White House staffers and reporters about how long the Bidens can keep Commander around. Some have even made bets on when the dog will be sent away, with Thanksgiving being a popular deadline. The situation has attracted attention from conservative legal activist group Judicial Watch, which obtained reports of ten previous incidents involving Commander's aggression towards staff members.

As of now, the White House has not responded to requests for comment on the matter. The ongoing issue has raised concerns about the safety of those working at the White House and the need for improved measures to protect staff members from further incidents.
