Gunfire exchange erupts in Connecticut police department lobby as woman opens fire

23:05 06.10.2023

In a shocking incident, a former Connecticut state employee, identified as Suzanne Laprise, allegedly walked into the Bristol Police Department and opened fire at the front desk, starting a wild shootout with officers before ultimately being taken into custody. The incident occurred around 10:35 p.m. on Thursday night.

According to the police department's announcement on Facebook, Laprise fired multiple rounds into the window of the front desk upon entering the lobby. Fortunately, no one was present at the desk at that time, and the bullet-resistant glass prevented the bullets from penetrating through.

The sound of gunfire immediately alerted officers inside the building, who quickly responded to the lobby. They attempted to negotiate with Laprise, but as they approached, she aimed her weapon at them, prompting the officers to return fire. However, the bullets were once again stopped by the bullet-resistant glass, preventing any injuries.

Eventually, Laprise decided to put down her gun, providing officers with a moment to tase her and take her into custody. She was then transported to a local hospital for evaluation, where she was determined to have suffered no serious injuries. Following the evaluation, Laprise was transferred to police custody.

The motive behind Laprise's actions remains unclear, and the investigation is being handled by the Connecticut State Police Central District Major Crimes Division and Inspector General's Office. Laprise had previously worked at the Connecticut Department of Developmental Services, but the reason for her departure from the agency and her role there are still unknown.

Laprise is now facing multiple charges, including criminal attempt of murder with special circumstance, illegal discharge of a firearm, criminal use of a weapon, illegal carry of firearms under the influence of drugs or alcohol, illegal possession of a large capacity magazine, criminal mischief, reckless endangerment, and breach of peace. Initially held on a $3 million bond, she was scheduled to be arraigned at New Britain Superior Court on Friday.

In the aftermath of the incident, the Bristol Police Department announced that their lobby would be closed for walk-in complaints to facilitate repairs and maintenance.

This disturbing incident serves as a reminder of the dangers that law enforcement officers face every day while carrying out their duties. The swift response from the officers and their ability to neutralize the threat without any injuries is a testament to their training and bravery. As the investigation continues, authorities are working to unravel the motives behind Laprise's actions and ensure justice is served.
