Alyssa Nakken's Managerial Interview with SF Giants Stirs World Series Champ's Criticism

04:39 18.10.2023

In a recent interview for the Giants' open managerial position, Alyssa Nakken, an assistant coach for the San Francisco Giants, made history as the first woman to interview for a managerial job in the major leagues. However, her candidacy has faced criticism from former Giants player Aubrey Huff, who doubled down on his previous criticism of the organization for considering Nakken for the role.

Huff took to social media, specifically X (formerly known as Twitter), to express his frustration with the Giants organization. He referred to them as embarrassing and praised Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy for his "old school" mentality. In an interview on "OutKick The Morning w/Charly Arnolt," Huff elaborated on his criticism, stating that he believes the increasing influence of analytics and "woke, progressive nerds" in baseball front offices has led to the invention of meaningless statistics to score political points. He argued that the game should be managed based on gut feelings, as demonstrated by managers like Dusty Baker, Bruce Bochy, and even Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter, who have advocated for a more traditional approach.

Huff also expressed concerns about the potential negative consequences of having a woman in a major league clubhouse. He questioned whether men would be willing to take orders from a woman, especially one who has never played Major League Baseball and faced the challenges of a 97-mile-per-hour pitch. Huff raised concerns about issues related to the #MeToo movement and the potential for accidental physical contact between Nakken and male players.

Furthermore, Huff dismissed Nakken's qualifications, stating that she is being considered for the job only to fulfill a political agenda. He believes that she will not ultimately be hired but that the Giants want to portray themselves as woke and inclusive by giving her an opportunity.

Contrary to Huff's criticisms, Nakken has an impressive background in sports. She was a standout softball player at Sacramento State from 2009 to 2012 and was hired by the Giants in 2020 as an assistant coach. She has also earned multiple academic honors and holds a master's degree in sports management from the University of San Francisco. Nakken interned for the Giants' baseball operations department in 2014, further showcasing her dedication and experience within the organization.

Although Nakken's chances of landing the managerial position are uncertain due to stiff competition, including internal candidates Mark Hallberg and Kai Correa, and special assistant to baseball operations Ron Wotus, her interview signifies a significant step toward gender equality in baseball.

The Giants' decision to fire Gabe Kapler, their previous manager, comes after a disappointing season in which the team missed the playoffs. The team's performance has declined since their successful run of three World Series championships in five years. The search for a new manager is underway, and Nakken's interview demonstrates the organization's commitment to diversity and inclusion.

While Nakken's potential hiring as the Giants' manager would make history, it remains to be seen if she will be offered and accept the position. The ongoing interview process will determine the outcome, and the baseball world will be watching closely to see if the Giants truly embrace change and make a groundbreaking decision in the sport.
