Mexico and Barbuda brace for back-to-back hurricanes Norma and Tammy

18:00 22.10.2023

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico (AP) - The coastal town of Cabo San Lucas in Mexico's Baja California Peninsula was hit by Hurricane Norma, which made landfall on Saturday as a Category 1 storm. The resort city experienced strong winds and heavy rain, causing fallen trees and power outages. However, there were no major reports of damage or injuries in the area, and tourists began to emerge from their shelters, with some making plans to leave the town. The San Jose del Cabo airport resumed operations on Sunday morning, allowing tourists to fly out of the area.

Meanwhile, on the Caribbean island of Barbuda, Hurricane Tammy made landfall on Saturday night. The island, which was devastated by Hurricane Irma in 2017, escaped with minor damage from Tammy. There were no reports of injuries, although the storm knocked down power lines and caused a temporary island-wide blackout. At least two families had to be evacuated, but there was no major infrastructural damage reported. Antigua, the neighboring island, fared much better, with only a few broken branches and utility lines.

As Norma moved northeastward across the Gulf of California, it was downgraded to a tropical storm on Sunday. The storm continued to bring heavy rains and strong winds to the area, raising the threat of flash flooding and mudslides. Schools in Sinaloa state were closed on Monday, and 120 shelters were opened for those in need. The Mexican navy deployed 5,000 marines to provide assistance to the affected areas.

Tropical Storm Otis also formed over the Pacific, south-southeast of Acapulco, Mexico. It is expected to move north-northwestward and bring heavy rainfall to coastal areas of southern Mexico later in the week.

Overall, both Norma and Tammy caused relatively minor damage and no reported fatalities. The Mexican and local authorities were prepared for the storms and took necessary precautions to ensure the safety of residents and tourists.
