Rep. Jared Golden of Maine Reverses Stance, Urges Ban on Assault Weapons

20:54 26.10.2023

In a dramatic reversal of his previous stance on gun control, Democratic Representative Jared Golden of Maine called on Congress to ban assault weapons following the tragic mass shootings in Lewiston. At a news conference on Thursday, Golden expressed his regret for opposing previous efforts to ban such weapons and took responsibility for the failure to pass gun control measures in the past. The shootings took place at a bowling alley and a restaurant in Lewiston, resulting in the deaths of at least 18 people and leaving 13 others wounded. The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Robert Card, is still at large.

Golden, who has previously voted against gun control bills, including a ban on certain semi-automatic weapons, stated that he is now willing to work with his colleagues to pass such measures. He acknowledged the cycle of partisan debate and ineffective proposals that have followed previous mass shootings and emphasized the need for substantive and effective legislation to prevent individuals with violent intent from obtaining or possessing weapons.

As a Marine Corps veteran and resident of Lewiston, Golden's change of heart reflects the impact the tragic events had on him personally. He emphasized the importance of humility and accountability in the face of such tragedies. Golden, known as a conservative Democrat, had previously opposed efforts to ban assault-style weapons, stating that he did not support any version of such a ban.

The issue of gun control has long been a divisive one in American politics, with Democrats advocating for stricter regulations while Republicans often argue against them, citing concerns about constitutional rights and suggesting alternative approaches such as focusing on mental health or increasing security measures. At the news conference, Maine Senator Susan Collins, a moderate Republican, expressed support for certain measures, such as a ban on high-volume ammunition magazines, but did not back an assault rifle ban.

The mass shooting in Lewiston has reignited the debate on gun control and prompted calls for action. Golden's change of position has garnered support from some, including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a progressive Democrat. However, it is unlikely that Congress will take significant action on gun legislation, given the deeply entrenched conservative opposition to measures that could be seen as infringing on Second Amendment rights. The compromise law passed last year, which expanded background checks and allocated federal funds for mental health and red-flag laws, fell short of the comprehensive changes Democrats have sought. Only a small number of Republicans supported the bill.

The tragic events in Lewiston have brought the issue of gun control to the forefront once again, with Golden's change of stance highlighting the need for action. However, the political landscape and entrenched positions make it uncertain whether meaningful gun control legislation will be passed in the near future.
