House Considers Censuring Greene and Tlaib as Tensions Escalate

21:24 05.11.2023

In a continuation of the ongoing feud between Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib, Greene has announced her plans to reintroduce a resolution to censure Tlaib. This comes after her previous attempt failed to gather enough support in the House. Greene took to X, formerly Twitter, to make the announcement, stating that she would be removing the term insurrection from the resolution and replacing it with "illegal occupation." She argued that Tlaib's actions during a pro-Palestinian rally on October 18th, where activists took over parts of the Cannon House Office Building, violated federal laws and led to numerous arrests and assaults on Capitol Police.

To further emphasize her point, Greene posted a photo of the 23 Republicans who voted against censuring Tlaib, accusing them of voting "no to censure Pro-terrorists Pro-Hamas Anti-Israel anti-Semitic Rashida Tlaib." She called on these lawmakers to use their freedom of speech in Congress to condemn Tlaib's "speech, lies, and actions" that she claims incited the illegal occupation. Greene also referenced the previous censure of Rep. Adam Schiff, suggesting that Tlaib should face similar consequences for her actions.

In response to Greene's efforts, Tlaib called them unhinged and "deeply Islamophobic" in a statement. She expressed her solidarity with Jewish peace advocates and called for a ceasefire and the release of hostages. Tlaib also criticized Greene's past controversial statements and accused her of making antisemitic remarks.

The House is set to vote on Wednesday evening to decide whether to table or kill the censure resolutions against both Greene and Tlaib. These resolutions serve as formal reprimands for conduct that falls short of warranting expulsion from Congress. The prospects for either resolution are currently uncertain.

The controversy surrounding Tlaib stems from her criticism of Israel and her support for Palestinians. She has accused President Biden of supporting the genocide of the Palestinian people through the administration's backing of Israel during the recent war. The conflict began on October 7th when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, resulting in thousands of casualties in both Israel and Gaza. According to the Israeli Defense Forces, Hamas has also taken hundreds of hostages.

Greene's resolution against Tlaib was met with retaliation from Democratic Rep. Becca Balint of Vermont, who filed a resolution to censure Greene. Balint accused Greene of making racist, antisemitic, xenophobic statements, and promoting conspiracy theories. Balint argued that Greene's resolution against Tlaib was an Islamophobic attack and perpetuated hate and fear towards Muslim Americans.

The feud between Greene and Tlaib highlights the deep divides within Congress and underscores the ongoing tensions surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As the House prepares to vote on the censure resolutions, the outcome remains uncertain, but the controversy surrounding these lawmakers is unlikely to dissipate any time soon.
