Massive Migrant Caravan Grows as Hundreds Join En Route to US

22:12 05.11.2023

In an ongoing and unprecedented display of mass migration, thousands of migrants from various countries such as Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, and Venezuela are making their way towards the U.S.-Mexico border. The already extensive caravan, consisting of an estimated 7,000 individuals, recently received news of hundreds more migrants joining their ranks. These additional migrants departed from the southern Mexican city of Tapachula on Sunday and are expected to reunite with the larger group in Huixtla, located just north of Tapachula.

According to Reuters, the migrants in the caravan have expressed their frustration with the lengthy process of obtaining a humanitarian visa, which often takes approximately 3.4 months. Selma Alvarez, a Venezuelan migrant, stated that traveling in caravans feels safer than navigating the perilous journey north alone, as they are at the mercy of criminals along the way. Alvarez also highlighted the group's impatience to reach the border, where they intend to utilize the U.S. government app, CBP One, to make appointments and request asylum.

Caravans like this one have become a regular occurrence at the U.S.-Mexico border in recent years, with migrants either seeking refuge in Mexico or attempting to enter the United States in smaller groups. However, the sheer number of individuals in this particular caravan serves as a stark reminder of the surge in migration that has overwhelmed the U.S. border. Republicans, who have criticized the Biden administration for its rollback of Trump-era border policies and releases of migrants into the U.S. interior, have pointed to this caravan as evidence of the administration's failure to address the crisis effectively.

The Biden administration has defended its approach, stating that it is working to restore asylum pathways that were dismantled during the previous administration. They argue that they are dealing with a historic crisis affecting the entire region, and they have called on Congress to pass immigration reform legislation to address the broken system. Additionally, the Biden administration has requested $14 billion in funding, a portion of which would be allocated to increase the use of expedited removal for individuals in the country illegally. The funding would also support the hiring of additional staff, including Border Patrol agents, attorneys, and processing coordinators, and provide resources for "Safe Mobility Offices" and support for host communities and legal pathways in the region.

As the smaller caravan prepares to join the larger group, concerns are mounting for both the migrants and the Biden administration. President Biden, who is seeking reelection next year, is facing pressure to address the rising number of unauthorized crossings into the U.S. from Mexico. This year has witnessed a record-breaking influx of individuals crossing the treacherous Darien Gap region, which connects Panama and Colombia.

The ongoing migration crisis continues to pose significant challenges for the Biden administration and demands immediate attention and comprehensive solutions. The fate of the thousands of migrants making their way towards the U.S.-Mexico border remains uncertain, as the political, humanitarian, and logistical implications of their journey continue to unfold.
