Nashville authorities investigate leaked manifesto of Christian school shooter

12:04 07.11.2023

The Nashville mayor's office has called for an investigation into the possible unauthorized release of the writings of Audrey Hale, the shooter who carried out a deadly attack at the Covenant School in March. The shooter killed three children and three adults before being fatally shot by police. Conservative radio host Steven Crowder released three images of the shooter's writings, claiming they were from the day of the rampage. The authenticity of the documents has not been confirmed.

Nashville Mayor Freddie O'Connell expressed concern for the safety and well-being of the Covenant families and all Nashvillians who are grieving. The Metro Nashville Police Department stated that the images were not their crime scene images and that they were working with the city's legal team to investigate the possible leak. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation declined to confirm the authenticity of the documents.

Authorities have not released any of the shooter's journals or writings that were collected after the shooting. According to court filings, the shooter left behind at least 20 journals, a suicide note, and a memoir. Initially, the police stated that they would release the documents after the investigation was closed, but after a lawsuit was filed to obtain the writings, they decided to await the court's direction.

The lawsuit, filed by a group seeking the documents, argues that since the suspect is deceased, the records should be immediately released. The families of the Covenant School have repeatedly stated that they have not seen the shooter's writings and believe that their release will only cause more pain and potentially inspire copycat attacks. The lawsuit is currently ongoing, and a chancery court judge ruled that the families could intervene in the case.

The shooter killed three children, identified as Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs, and William Kinney. The three adults killed were the head of the school, Katherine Koonce, custodian Mike Hill, and substitute teacher Cynthia Peak.

Nashville's law director, Wally Dietz, confirmed the launch of an investigation into the possible leak but could not confirm or deny the authenticity of the documents due to limited information. The Associated Press has also not confirmed the authenticity of the documents released by Crowder. Attorneys representing the Covenant School families have criticized the release of the images, expressing concern that they could inspire further attacks.

The shooter, Audrey Hale, opened fire at the Covenant School in March, killing six people. Mayor Freddie O'Connell called for an investigation into the release of images purported to be the shooter's writings. The authenticity of the documents has not been confirmed. The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department stated that the images were not their crime scene images. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is aware of the images but cannot speak to their authenticity.

A group of parents from the Covenant School have filed a motion to keep the shooter's writings secret, arguing that their release will only cause more pain and potentially inspire copycat attacks. The release of the images has been criticized by parents, who believe it is harmful and unnecessary. The release of any writings is the subject of an ongoing lawsuit.

The shooter had been planning the attack for months and fired 152 rounds before being killed by police. The shooter had an undisclosed emotional disorder but authorities have not disclosed a link between that and the shooting. The refusal to release the shooter's writings has fueled speculation and conspiracy theories about the shooter's motive or influences.
