Coaches clash in postgame handshake scuffle

07:28 19.11.2023

The clash between two head coaches, Shaheen Holloway and Donald Copeland, during a postgame handshake after Seton Hall's victory over Wagner has sent shockwaves through the basketball community. The incident, which occurred at the Prudential Center in New Jersey, unfolded when Holloway pulled Copeland's arm in anger, forcing other coaches to step in and separate them.

Before the game, the former Seton Hall guards had shared what was described as a "warm embrace," indicating a friendly relationship between the two. However, tensions flared when Wagner's Tahron Allen committed a foul with just 37 seconds remaining on the clock, with Seton Hall comfortably leading by 19 points. Holloway expressed his displeasure to Copeland, which escalated into the shocking altercation.

In the aftermath of the incident, Holloway took full responsibility for his actions, expressing his disappointment in himself for allowing such a situation to escalate. He emphasized his respect for Copeland, stating that he viewed him as a little brother and acknowledging that the incident should have never occurred. Holloway recognized that the competitive nature of the game sometimes overrides personal relationships and expressed his regret for his part in the confrontation.

Copeland also issued apologies, both publicly and to his team in private. He expressed his respect for Holloway and admitted that their competitive nature as former players may have contributed to the altercation. Copeland stressed that he is solely focused on coaching his team and that he wants to set a better example for his players. He acknowledged the importance of the Seton Hall culture and emphasized that the incident does not reflect the values he holds dear.

Holloway's coaching career has seen notable success, most notably leading St. Peter's to an unprecedented Elite Eight appearance as a 15 seed in 2022. Copeland, on the other hand, had previously served as an assistant coach at Seton Hall before taking the head coaching position at Wagner.

While Seton Hall's men's basketball team is off to an impressive 4-0 start, this unfortunate incident has overshadowed their early success. The altercation between the head coaches has taken the spotlight away from the team's achievements on the court and has left a mark on both programs. Both Holloway and Copeland have publicly acknowledged their regret and have vowed to learn from the situation, emphasizing the importance of maintaining professionalism and sportsmanship in the game they love.
