Iowa woman brutally mauled by pack of dogs, undergoes double amputation

17:43 02.12.2023

A horrific pit bull attack in Fort Dodge, Iowa has left Brittany Skoland, a mother of young children, in critical condition with life-altering injuries. The incident occurred on Friday morning when neighbors reported hearing a woman's screams. Authorities quickly responded to the scene, only to find three pit bulls viciously attacking Ms. Skoland.

In a desperate attempt to save her, officers initially tried to scare the dogs away. However, their efforts proved futile, and they were forced to resort to lethal force. All three pit bulls were shot and killed on the spot. The sound of gunshots rang through the neighborhood, prompting curious onlookers to gather at the scene.

According to witnesses, Ms. Skoland suffered severe head trauma, leading to the amputation of both her legs below the knees. She also sustained devastating injuries to her hands, resulting in the loss of certain digits. The extent of her injuries necessitated immediate medical attention beyond the capabilities of Unity Point Trinity Medical Center, prompting her transfer to the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines via airlift.

Kerri Johnson, a concerned neighbor who witnessed the aftermath, described the heartbreaking scene. "I came outside originally and I saw police with his gun drawn. He had said for me to go inside and I did, but after a couple of moments, my curiosity is piqued," said Mr. Johnson. "I stepped out into the driveway just to take a peek, I saw a black dog lying down on the ground, deceased, which is super sad."

It has been reported that the three pit bulls responsible for the attack belonged to the distraught neighbors themselves. The motive behind the attack is still under investigation, and authorities have not yet filed any charges.

Ms. Skoland's road to recovery will be arduous and extensive. In addition to her physical injuries, she will require facial reconstruction surgery to repair the damage inflicted during the attack. To assist with medical expenses and the necessary modifications to accommodate her disabilities, her loved ones have set up a GoFundMe page. As of Saturday, the fundraiser has already garnered over $13,600 in donations.

Teresa Hanus, Ms. Skoland's aunt, shared heartfelt sentiments about her niece's love for outdoor activities and spending time with her children. "Those who know Brittany, know she loves to be outside, doing yard work, helping her mom decorate for the holidays. She also enjoys playing outside with her younger children," wrote Ms. Hanus in the fundraiser description.

While the community rallies around Ms. Skoland and her family, the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the pit bull attack continues. Authorities are determined to uncover the truth and hold any responsible parties accountable for the devastating consequences of this tragedy.
