With tsunami warning

19:52 02.12.2023

A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 struck off the coast of the southern Philippine island of Mindanao on Saturday night, sending shockwaves of panic and fear throughout the region. The quake, which occurred at 10:37 p.m., had a depth of 20 miles according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Videos and photos shared on social media platforms such as X showed alarming scenes of chaos and destruction. People could be seen crouching in fear in the lobbies of hotels and restaurants, desperately clutching onto wobbling tables. One particularly harrowing CCTV footage captured the moment a church in Surigao City began to crumble, sending a chilling reminder of the devastating power of natural disasters.

In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning, indicating the possibility of tsunami waves hitting the southern Philippines, as well as parts of Indonesia, Palau, and Malaysia. However, the severity of the threat was later downgraded as the U.S. Tsunami Warning System announced that the danger had passed. "Based on all available data," stated the official announcement, "the tsunami threat from this earthquake has now passed."

Despite the downgrade, authorities were quick to take precautionary measures. Teresito Bacolcol, the head of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, urged residents along the coast of southern Surigao del Sur and Davao Oriental provinces to evacuate immediately to higher ground or move further inland. This swift response aimed to prevent any potential casualties or injuries resulting from potential aftershocks or secondary effects of the earthquake.

The Philippines, located on the notorious Pacific "Ring of Fire," is no stranger to seismic activity. The region is prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to the presence of numerous active faults and tectonic plates. As such, the government and its agencies remain vigilant and prepared to respond to any natural disaster that may occur within the country's borders.

The impact of this earthquake will undoubtedly leave a lasting mark on the affected communities. However, the resilience and determination of the Philippine people, coupled with the swift response from authorities, will likely contribute to a timely recovery and rebuilding process. As the nation comes together to support those affected, it is a reminder of the strength and unity that can emerge in the face of adversity.
