LA Police Launch Manhunt for Serial Killer Targeting Homeless Community

06:28 03.12.2023

Los Angeles is on high alert as authorities search for a suspected serial killer who has targeted three homeless men. LAPD Chief Michel Moore held an emergency press conference to address the escalating situation and appeal for public assistance in capturing the individual responsible for these heinous crimes. The first murder occurred on November 26th at approximately 3:10 am in the Westmont neighborhood. The victim, identified as 37-year-old Jose Bolanos, was shot while sleeping on a couch in a rear alley. Just one day later, at around 4:55 am, the second victim, 62-year-old Mark Diggs, was gunned down in downtown Los Angeles as he leaned on a wall, waiting for his phone to charge. The most recent killing took place on Wednesday at approximately 2:30 am in Lincoln Heights, where a 52-year-old Hispanic man was shot while sleeping on a sidewalk.

Chief Moore highlighted the similarities in the crimes that suggest a connection between the murders. All three victims were targeted before 5 am, and they were found sleeping in open areas such as sidewalks or alleyways. The killer appears to be targeting individuals who are alone rather than homeless encampments. "The commonalities among these homicides are that each of the victims was in an open area, alone," Chief Moore emphasized during the press conference. "We believe a single individual approached each one and shot and killed each one as they slept."

In an effort to apprehend the suspect, the police released screengrabs from surveillance footage showing the alleged serial killer and their vehicle. The suspect is seen wearing a light-colored hoodie and dark pants, while the exact model of the car remains undisclosed. Chief Moore explained that additional video footage leading up to the third homicide would not be released at this time.

To protect the vulnerable homeless population, the city has established temporary winter shelters, and patrols have been increased in areas where homeless individuals tend to sleep. Mayor Karen Bass urged the public to raise awareness about the investigation and encouraged the unhoused community to seek shelter and services. "Our message to the unhoused community is clear; do not sleep alone tonight, seek shelter, seek services, stay together," Mayor Bass implored.

The investigation has brought together homicide detectives from various police stations, and a forensic team is on standby to process evidence promptly. Chief Moore revealed that he is coordinating with neighboring law enforcement departments in Glendale, Pasadena, and Longbeach. However, he believes that, at this time, the killer has not struck outside of Los Angeles. Over 40 agencies have been briefed on the developments of the case, ensuring collaborative efforts to solve the string of killings.

In response to these brutal murders, Mayor Bass has been working to expand shelter services and make them more accessible. She acknowledged the need to prioritize the safety of the unhoused population and assured that measures are being taken to address the situation. "Our message to our unhoused community is clear - try not to be alone tonight," Mayor Bass cautioned. She also urged Angelenos to inform their friends and family who are unhoused about the existing danger.

As the search for the serial killer intensifies, law enforcement is urging anyone with information to come forward and assist in the investigation. The Homicide Special Section can be reached at (213) 486-6890. The city remains on high alert, determined to bring justice to the victims and ensure the safety of its vulnerable homeless population.
