Yuletide Surprise: Baby Owl Discovered Living in Kentucky Family's Christmas Tree

04:20 16.12.2023

In a surprising turn of events, a Kentucky family discovered an unexpected guest in their Christmas tree this year - a baby owl. The White family of Lexington has a tradition of picking out their own Christmas tree, and this year seemed like any other. Little did they know, the tree they brought home would be housing a feathered intruder for four whole days.

Michele White, a resident of Lexington, recounted the incident to WDKY-TV, expressing her astonishment that they didn't notice anything unusual during those four days. "I have three dogs," Ms. White said, emphasizing how active the room where the tree was placed is. "We use this room nonstop: watch TV; the kitchen's right here; no indication."

It was Bobby Hayes, the owner of Magic Carpet Cleaning, who discovered the hidden owl while he was at the White family's home, performing his regular cleaning duties while they were out. As he plugged in a piece of equipment, he noticed the tree starting to sway. Upon closer inspection, he spotted the owl perched on a lower limb of the tree. "It crawled up into the tree further," Mr. Hayes explained. "It took me several minutes to even find it."

Realizing the need to inform the family about their unexpected visitor, Mr. Hayes quickly snapped some photos of the owl and sent them to Ms. White. She expressed her relief that Mr. Hayes was there to handle the situation. Thankfully, Mr. Hayes was able to safely release the owl in the family's backyard, ensuring that everyone could continue to enjoy a merry Christmas.

The White family's Christmas tree had unwittingly become the temporary home of this young owl, hidden among the branches, evading detection for four days. Michele White revealed to FOX 56 that the owl managed to blend in seamlessly with the tree's branches, making it difficult to spot. It wasn't until the family returned from their yearly hunt for the perfect Christmas tree that their festive decoration was disturbed, and the owl's presence was discovered.

Bobby Hayes, the observant cleaner, was the first to notice the movement in the tree's branches. Taking a closer look, he was stunned to find a small owl rustling through the branches. Hayes wasted no time, grabbing the owl and promptly sending a picture to Ms. White. "I was shocked. I was so stunned," she recalled. Initially, she believed that Mr. Hayes was playing a prank by placing a stuffed animal or ornament in the tree. With disbelief, she immediately called him, asking if he was kidding.

Dispelling any doubts, Hayes assured Ms. White that the owl was indeed real and not a prank. With utmost care, he gently removed the owl from its cozy hideaway and found a suitable wooded area to release the baby bird. The owl was finally free from its unintended captivity, and the White family could now continue their holiday celebrations knowing that their Christmas tree was no longer an owl's secret sanctuary.
