Alex Jones and Sandy Hook Families Enter Final Stretch in Bankruptcy Fight

18:21 16.12.2023

Jones, in a Connecticut lawsuit over his claims that the shooting was a hoax. The families won a $1.4 billion judgment against him, which led to his bankruptcy filing. In his proposal, Jones suggests that the families accept a settlement of $5.5 million per year for 10 years, along with a percentage of his income from selling personal property. In exchange, the families would give up any legal claims against Jones or related parties.

However, the families have their own plan, which seeks to liquidate nearly all of Jones' assets, including his media company Free Speech Systems. The proceeds would be distributed to the families and other creditors. They argue that Jones' proposal falls short of what they are entitled to under bankruptcy laws. They also allege that Jones has engaged in excessive personal spending and has hidden millions of dollars in an attempt to protect his wealth.

The dueling plans were filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Houston and will be debated and challenged over the next two months. Hearings are scheduled for February to determine the final order of how much Jones will have to pay out.

This latest development comes on the heels of the 11th anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, which resulted in the deaths of 20 children and six educators. Jones, a right-wing conspiracy theorist, has repeatedly claimed that the shooting was staged by crisis actors in an effort to increase gun control. The families of the victims have faced years of harassment and threats from those who believe Jones' false claims.

Jones' lawyers have not yet responded to the new bankruptcy filings, and it is unclear how they will argue against the families' proposal. The families' attorney, Christopher Mattei, argues that their plan is the only feasible way to ensure that Jones' assets are quickly distributed to those he has harassed for more than a decade.

Both Jones and Free Speech Systems filed for bankruptcy last year after the families were awarded more than $1.4 billion in damages in a Connecticut lawsuit. A third trial is pending in Texas over another lawsuit filed by the parents of a child killed in the school shooting.

In the midst of these legal battles, Jones has continued to assert his right to free speech. He is appealing the $1.5 billion in lawsuit awards and maintains that his comments about the shooting are protected by the First Amendment.

The judge overseeing the bankruptcy case recently granted Jones approval to sell some of his assets, including guns, vehicles, and jewelry, to raise money for creditors. The families' plan, if approved, would create a trust that would have the power to recoup any money Jones has paid to others if those transfers were not allowed by law.

The news of the dueling bankruptcy plans comes as the Sandy Hook families continue to seek justice and closure for the tragedy they have endured. While the final outcome remains uncertain, the families are hopeful that they will receive the compensation and accountability they deserve.
