Military Christmas wish: Deployed US Army unit calls for rescue of puppies and cat from freezing weather

17:30 17.12.2023

A heartwarming story has emerged from a US Army unit, whose soldiers are currently deployed and are desperate to rescue their beloved pets from freezing weather conditions. The soldiers, who have chosen to remain anonymous for privacy reasons, discovered nine puppies and a cat named Little Beans while on duty. These unfortunate animals were "born into a hostile environment that threatens to claim their lives at any moment," according to the New York-based nonprofit organization Paws of War.

Paws of War, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping animals affected by war, revealed that the puppies, named Onyx, Anakin, Ella, Gremlin, Obi, Lulu, Robert, Franky, and Jerry, are in grave danger as they struggle to survive in the harsh elements. With temperatures plunging and snowfall becoming increasingly heavy, the soldiers have been doing their best to protect the animals from the cold weather conditions. However, they are now calling on Paws of War and its War-Torn Pups and Cats program to assist in shipping the dogs and cat to safety in America.

"We are working around the clock to be able to rescue everyone, but this is a big operation," said Robert Misseri, co-founder of Paws of War. "Due to the increase in war and unrest, we have been inundated with requests for help from our troops to save the animals they love."

One soldier, identified only as Specialist L, has developed a special bond with one of the puppies, Onyx. Specialist L, who tragically lost his own dog, Tonka, just before being deployed, described Onyx as a new best friend. He found the puppy abandoned in the dirt during a torrential rainstorm, with bleeding wounds, infected skin, and crawling with mites. Unable to resist the puppy's pleading eyes, Specialist L decided to take him in.

"I didn't dare hope for a while, but day by day he grew a little stronger, and after four months of care he had recovered enough that his personality was showing," Specialist L shared. "I knew then, there was no way I could face the heartbreak of losing him and leaving him behind to suffer. He means the world to me."

As the winter intensifies, Specialist L can only pray that Onyx and the other animals have the chance to make it to safety in America. The soldier emphasized the joy and companionship that these animals have brought to the unit and pleaded for help to save them, as the alternative is something none of them are ready to face.

Paws of War is currently juggling 40 rescue missions, relying on the support of compassionate members of the public to save these innocent lives. This heartwarming story serves as a reminder of the incredible bond between humans and animals and the lengths that people will go to protect and care for their furry friends.
