NYPD Fatally Shoots Bronx Man Holding Knife to Mom's Throat

03:42 24.12.2023

In a harrowing incident that unfolded in a Bronx apartment on Saturday, an emotionally disturbed man was shot and killed by police after holding a large knife to his mother's throat. The incident occurred on the 13th floor of 2865 Creston Ave in the Bedford Park neighborhood.

According to the husband of the woman who was held at knifepoint, he was present in the apartment when the violent scene unfolded. The man, who chose to remain anonymous, revealed that he heard his step-son making threatening remarks while he was in the bathtub and immediately called 911. He expressed his gratitude that the police responded quickly, as he believed that either his wife or her 30-year-old son would have died if the officers hadn't arrived in time.

The witness recalled standing next to the officer during the confrontation, stating that the officer had repeatedly commanded the suspect to put down the knife and release the woman. However, the emotionally disturbed man refused to comply and instead tightened his grip on his mother's throat. Fearing for the woman's life, one of the officers fired a single shot, hitting the suspect in the head. The man confirmed that his wife had lost consciousness due to the chokehold at the time the shot was fired.

The suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, was pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital. According to the victim's husband, the police were not at fault in this situation, deeming it a "righteous shooting." He expressed profound gratitude that his wife was alive and praised the quick response of the officers.

Police officials provided further details during a press conference. NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell stated that responding officers were met by a screaming 19-year-old family member who had apparent slice wounds on her face. Upon entering the apartment, they discovered the suspect holding his mother in a front headlock, with a large carving knife pressed against her throat. The mother was visibly injured and bleeding.

Despite numerous demands to drop the weapon, the suspect refused to do so, leading to the officer's single shot. Chief Chell emphasized that the entire incident was captured on the officer's body camera, providing a clear record of the events.

Sources close to the family revealed that the suspect had a history of mental illness and substance abuse and was not taking his medication at the time. Witnesses in the neighborhood described hearing the family dog howling throughout the night before the incident occurred. Further accounts from neighbors suggested that the suspect had been agitated and demanding the keys to a closet from his mother.

James Watson, a friend of the victim's husband, conveyed that the suspect had been exhibiting mood swings and had been acting out the entire night leading up to the altercation with the police. He stated that the suspect didn't recognize the officers and became increasingly out of control upon their arrival.

Chief Chell commended the officers for their composure during the intense and chaotic situation. He emphasized that the officers' swift response had saved the life of the 45-year-old mother. Acknowledging the tragic nature of the incident, Chief Chell expressed gratitude that the police had arrived quickly, preventing further harm to the family.

The officers involved in the shooting had just over two years on the job, according to Chief Chell. As the investigation continues, the husband of the victim awaits the opportunity to clean the apartment before his wife's release from the hospital. He stated that his wife is recovering, and he has spoken to her, ensuring her well-being during this difficult time.
